Emma the Blogging Beagle

Living with a dog with separation anxiety can be really stressful. It’s a good thing my dog has a sense of humor about it. 😀

Emma the Beagle here. The Girl did that thing again where she goes in and out of the garage and then takes a really long time to come back in. I was bored, so I hijacked her MacBook to do some blog…

What a wonderful review. I'm thrilled this family has gotten their lives back.

"Working with Tracy was nothing short of amazing. She has a well-defined system, easy to follow structure, excellent feedback and response time, and is always available. Tracy’s business is transparent, her communication style is crystal clear, and the payment process was straightforward and easy. Our pup, a beagle mix, may ultimately have had less separation anxiety than us, but with Tracy’s help we have finally gotten our lives back! This is not an exaggeration! Dinner, brunch, shopping, we’re now able to do it all, and have drastically reduced our pet care costs. What’s more, our pup is comfortable and trust-worthy at home. No distress, no chewing, no howling. We can’t thank Tracy enough and would recommend her to literally everyone."

Turning Off The Camera - Malena DeMartini

I had to work hard to look away from the camera after I taught Emma to feel safe being home alone, so I know what my clients are going through. Separation anxiety is stressful for the people as much as it is for the pups. Here's a fun blogpost I wrote last year that helps us people not worry when we lock the door behind us.

Weaning off watching the camera in a separation anxiety protocol can be extremely hard for many dog guardians. It is possible, however.

Being There for the Pups and the People - Malena DeMartini

I never ask my clients to do anything I haven't already done myself to help Emma the Beagle get over separation anxiety. So I know exactly what they are going through. A big piece of my job as a certified separation anxiety trainer is to be there to help the people, not just the pups.

(And P.S.: How freaking cute is Emma the Beagle?!? Look at the BELLY!!!! This is what she looks like now while we're away from home for hours.)

Many years ago I read a passage in a book that changed the way I viewed life. It was about washing dishes, of all things. Be in the moment — enjoy the moment — the passage read. If, when you are doing the dishes, you are thinking about what went wrong earlier in the day …

What and Who Dogs Want and Need: Love, Not Shocks

"There simply is no reason to cause pain to teach dogs how to live with us. Mutual respect and tolerance go a long way in developing and maintaining positive relationships between dogs and humans, and it's surely not at all shocking to know that dogs don't want to be shocked into submission or fear. Who would?

We impose a lot of demands imposed on dogs, day in and day out. We need to do all we can to reduce them to a minimum or to try to eliminate them totally. Kudos to Scotland for making this move.

We are most fortunate to have dogs in our lives, and we must work for the day when all dogs are most fortunate to have us in their lives. In the long run, we’ll all be better for it and it'll be win-win for all."

Dogs want to be showered with affection rather than tormented by shock collars

High-Tech Solutions For Your Dog's Separation Anxiety

Fascinating to go back and read this article that I wrote back in the days of yore when I was merely a client, not a certified separation anxiety trainer. Ems has come so far since then, and I love helping other dogs overcome this fear just like she did. Funny that all my client dogs progress through the protocol so much faster than my girl did. Thanks, Ems!

DESPERATE TO FIND A WAY TO HELP EMMA the anxious Beagle not have a meltdown every time I walked out the front door, I brought in multiple dog trainers, consulted four vets, cooked her food from scratch, gave her interactive food toys and played calming music. I even hired a doggie masseuse. Results?...

When It's Too Cold Outside for Puppy Play

I'm excited to share this article from the new Alexandria Living Magazine, which launched online yesterday. As the "pets" columnist I'll be talking about ways to build a better bond with your pup (or kitty or bunny...) and how to keep them safe and happy.

Struggling to find activities of your dog when it's freezing out? Here are some indoor options.

Here are some ways you can give your dogs the physical and mental enrichment they crave and need — inside, where it’s warm.
