If you find baby kittens (with no Momma in sight) leave them be, note the time and come back in a couple hours (moms will go hunt for 6-8 hours). Momma kitty is typically out looking for food, and/or may already be moving her kittens to a safer area; they are most likely not abandoned.

Kittens should stay with mom for the first 3-4 weeks for their best chance of survival. Do not take them, as most unweaned kittens do not survive being separated from their mom.

You can - provide food, water, and shelter for
Mom. Find a rescue for when kittens are old enough to be removed. Then trap mom and have her spayed to prevent the cycle from continuously repeating itself.

Every day Arlington Animal Services (AAS) takes in lost pets found throughout Arlington. Without a microchip it’s hard to help reunite an owner and pet. That’s were the public comes in, helping these distraught owners find and reclaim their pets is crucial. It frees up needed space for others who are lost, and gives some buffer space/time to adoptables or others who are Rescue Only.

PLEASE HELP US FIND THEIR OWNER!!

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) - Tips & Tricks

The bottle-and-string technique can be used to pick out a specific cat from the crowd, like one who is pregnant or injured. If you're trying to selectively trap, put a lot of bait in the rear of the trap. That way, a number of cats can go in, have a bite and leave while you wait for your target cat to do the same.

Use a bottle and string to manually close the front door. Open the front door and prop a corner on a full one-liter water bottle. Tie one end of a long piece of string around the bottle's base, then move away from the trap, holding onto the other end of the string. Wait for the cat to go all the way in, then yank the string, pulling the bottle away and shutting the trap door. Before you try this live, practice yanking the bottle away once or twice so you have the feel for it.

This also works for cats who avoid the trip plate and are happily munching away on the bait. You will want to get him out of the trap so you can set up the bottle and string; don't overly frighten them by making loud noises or rushing up to the trap or else they won't come back for seconds any time soon. Walk up slowly and quietly, giving them plenty of time to see you and back out of the trap. Sometimes the cat will step on the trip plate as he's exiting. If not, often they'll wait around for you to set up the bottle and string, then go back into the trap when you're a safe distance away.
