We do not have a local facility or an established network of foster homes; we use networking as our primary means of assisting Humboldt County dogs who have been abandoned and need a good new home. We may, on rare occasion, and when no other options exist, place a dog in foster care or work with individuals to arrange adoptions. We facilitate the placement of local dogs in rescues out of the area when we are able to make such arrangements.

Please note this important event coming up on July 17 in Hoopa. Two Rivers Rescue (short-hand version of their full name) is appearing before the Hoopa Tribal Council to make the case for the Hoopa Tribe to at least provide sheltering for stray animals on the Hoopa Reservation. This is a critical meeting because Two Rivers and their many friends and supporters have long believed that the situation re: animal control in Hoopa is out of control. The Humboldt County Animal Shelter will not take animals from Hoopa since the tribe has not entered into a contract with Humboldt County Animal Control, as have several other communities in this county.

Two Rivers is basically a one person operation and even with the many supporters and friends who help as much as they can, there is no way that this small group can help the animals that need it on the reservation.

If you have any input, please note that you can send it to Two Rivers now (and by the 16th) so it can be added to the support that Two Rivers needs to have in order to make its case as strongly as possible.

It's A Dog's Life has helped with a bunch of Hoopa strays, both financially and in actual rescue and adoption. We have shepherded a few dogs to other rescues for adoptions (which were top-notch), paid for medical care, and, even (1 of us) have adopted one and found local homes for others. Two Rivers does an amazing job of making a huge difference wherever they 'land'. We have also donated to Two Rivers so that they can continue their work.

We will be grateful for any support that our readers and supporters can provide to this effort. Please send a letter of support to Two Rivers and/or tune in to the zoom meeting and make supportive comments.

We, the strays of Hoopa, and Two Rivers thank you.

Using this all-too frequent type of post to remind our readers that the newly adopted dog does not know it 'belongs' in the new home. And, often, due to the huge change in the pet's life, that the urge to run away is strong. The animal wants to get back to where it was, which promises familiarity and contentment.

We're seeing a lot of these posts lately, including locally. We suspect that the agency doing the adoption counsels the new pet guardian to be aware of this but apparently, it's either treated too lightly or it is ignored by the adopter because these incidences are very frequent.

Imagine yourself instantly winding up in a foreign country where no one speaks your language, you know none of the cultural mores or traditions, you don't know how to find a bathroom, nothing at all is familiar. This is what happens when a pet goes to a new home.

That pet has no idea that you love it and want to keep it safe. All it knows is that it has been moved from familiar to totally foreign.

These tips can help: Keep harnesses on new dogs, properly fitted. Double leash to harness and collar and secure one of the leashes to your waist. Don't let them out in the yard unsupervised for at least a week. They'll likely be looking for a way out. Keep cats indoors for up to 3 months. Keep car windows closed enough to prevent escape. Use baby gates to prevent accidental exit through an open door. Keep house windows and doors secure from possible escape. Be acutely aware of escape opportunities that your new pet may use.

Dogs and cats both push window screens out. Slipped collars and harnesses are frequent. Unlatched gates and doors abound. Prevent having to say to yourself that you should/could have been more careful. That's a terrible position to be in.

Dog STOLEN from Sonoma County (CA) rescue!!

Please share and keep a lookout.

Update 5-24-25: We're sorry to report we don't have our stolen dog back. We promise to update you when we're able but cannot answer any specific questions. We appreciate your caring hearts and helping us locate where our dog is. This has been a nightmare for our team.

Update: Thanks to so many of you, we know exactly where Heather Reyes lives and that our stolen puppy is in her custody. We are hoping Heather will do the right thing and give us our puppy back.

PLEASE, do not contact any family members of Heather's or William's, they have nothing to do with our stolen puppy situation.
______________

Please share to help find our stolen puppy!.

$1000 reward for his safe return!

Do you know these people? Or recognize this puppy? These people scammed our rescue and stole our puppy by not paying adoption fees. They may still have him or may have sold him. Maurice is a pug mix, microchipped and reported as stolen but if he is returned to us promptly, or dropped off at a shelter or vet clinic in good health, no charged will be filed. If not, we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

We believe their names are: Heather Reyes – 56 years old and William Chamberlain – 55 years old. William may go by the name Billy.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of these people, or our puppy, please private message us on Facebook. We believe they are in the San Francisco Bay Area but our puppy could be anywhere. A reward of $1000 will be offered for Maurices safe return.

Making a difference one animal at a time.

We're hoping to find a great new home for HARI a dog whose former owners gave to a friend of a friend of ous to rehome.

This is just about a 'bomb proof' girl who is getting along grea with the other dogs in the household where she is now staying.

Hari is about 4 years old, spayed, current on vaccinations and eager to please. She seems to be a very resilient, accommodating girl who loves affection and being part of the family.

She is a medium sized girl, just under 40 lbs (healthy weight). She is microchipped and current on vaccinations, and spayed. She has been, what we can tell, well cared for in her previous home.

Just after coming to our friend, she had signs of a UTI and eventually it was obvious that she had a huge bladder stone. She will need to be on a prescription diet for the rest of her life in order to not have stones reform. Surgery was required to remove the stone (as large as her bladder!!) but she's healing nicely after the surgery a week ago.

Hari is a little cautious in her reactions to new situations but when she feels safe, she's happy and enthusiastic. We like this girl's personality and looks and think she's a great all-around dog. Sorry, we don't know how she gets along with cats or children. We believe any children in the family would need to be somewhere in the 8-9 and older age group just because she's a bit tentative in new situations.

Please contact us via our messenger if you want to meet Hari, need further information or wish to have an adoption application.

Our new special girl iHari, who had emergency surgery for a giant bladder stone last Friday, is doing really well and healing nicely.

Of course, she hates her cone but tranquilizers once a day are helping her with that stress. This huge stone required a very large incision in her bladder in order to remove it so she has a lot of healing to do. Her fosterers are doing such a great job helping her.

She's now on a prescription diet for the rest of her life to help her prevent more stones in the future.

We are hopeful there will be donations to help with her $3500 bill for the surgery.

If you can help, please send us a message.

Oh, she's also lookkng for her forever home! If you're interested in adopting her, please send us a message!
