Northwoods Animal Welfare Consulting - NAWC

Northwoods Animal Welfare Consulting - NAWC Animal welfare consultant and certified Humane Officer in North Central Wisconsin. Hello there! My name is Kayla Nikolai. My life-long passion is to help animals.

In 2017 I began working in veterinary medicine, in which I have been both a hospital manager and veterinary assistant (current). Separately, I completed the WI humane officer training fall 2024 and became certified by the DATCP. I am sensitive to the fact that a life lived alongside animals does not go without challenges. Animals have unique needs, including physiological challenges, and they help

lessly weather the ups and downs of the lives of their owners. This year I established Northwoods Animal Welfare Consulting and became the Humane Officer for the Town of Harrison. (Feb 1)

My goals will always be to help people provide the best possible life for their pets and livestock, and to advocate for animals in need. What a humane officer does:
• Uphold laws and local ordinances related to animals and their welfare. (95.21 ANIMAL HEALTH, 173 ANIMALS; HUMANE OFFICERS, 174 DOGS, 944.18 Be******ty, 951 CRIMES AGAINST ANIMALS)
• Safe custody of animals under 173.13(1)(a)1-9. (ie. 1. An abandoned or stray animal)
• Help law enforcement investigate allegations involving animals, as needed. (Tuesday, Thursday – Sunday)
PLEASE NOTE: A humane officer appointed by a city, village or town shall carry out his or duties within the boundaries of the city, village or town. (173.03(3))
Kayla Nikolai – Appointing Jurisdiction(s) as of February 1, 2025: Town of Harrison

I will do my best to respond to inquiries outside of my jurisdiction as a consultant, even if only to provide potentially helpful resources. Want a humane officer in your community? Feel free to share this information with members of your local government for consideration. (North Central Wisconsin)

With hot summer weather just around the corner, here's an important reminder on the dangers of leaving your pet inside your car and how quickly the temperatures can increase. The simplest tip - DO NOT DO IT.

If you would like to help spread the word at your veterinary clinic, be sure to download this poster at avma.org/PetsInCars.

Leptospirosis risk assessment has changed significantly in recent years.

Once considered primarily a concern for large-breed or rural dogs, leptospirosis is now recognized across a much broader range of patients and environments — including small dogs and urban populations.

The 2022 AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines identify leptospirosis vaccination as a core recommendation for dogs, reflecting the evolving epidemiology of the disease and its zoonotic potential.

Fawn season is upon us-- and many fawns we find DO NOT need rescue! If they are laying quietly in the grass or near trees, Mom Deer is nearby watching them. She doesn't want to lure predators to the infant. Please never touch, disturb, or feed a quiet fawn. Give the fawn room and Mom will move that little one during the night. Mom sees us as a predator. it is not uncommon for a fawn to be left lying in the same place for 8-12 hours at a time.
If the fawn is injured, walking and crying, or the ears are down or curled, please call our Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary Animal Care team at 920.391.3685-- we are 1 of 4 facilities in Wisconsin certified to rehabilitate fawns by WDNR! But-- we have county restrictions due to Brown being a non-CWD county.
Please never touch, treat, or feed a fawn-- please do call Animal Care for the best instructions at 920.391.3685.
We want to keep wildlife wild, but are here to help animals in need of assistance! Thank you!
And if you are interested in helping our wildlife rehabilitation program out, please consider donating to our program at https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=UTRC8FQ6H9WUY or picking up something from our wish lists at https://a.co/0cHRLukB and https://www.greenbaywi.gov/1317/Animal-Rehabilitation-Wish-List ! FOUND GOAT LOCATED AT HSPC! HELP US FIND THE OWNER!
The shelter-assigned name is Samson ID # 27934
FOUND 05/11/26 at County Road D and County Road AA in the Town of Belmont WI.
The full Lost & Found entry is on our website. You can find a link ▶ in the comments along with more information on the reclaim protocol.
We will not be able to answer inquiries or questions about a found animal on Facebook. Please call 715-344-6012 for answers to your questions. We are deliberately not posting identifying information other than a picture and general location. We want to give the owners the opportunity to correctly identify their animal to ensure the animal goes to the right home. We will try to update the listing if/when the animal has been reclaimed. There is a state mandatory 4-day hold for every stray. After that the animal will be assessed and may be available for adoption. We cannot “hold” any animal for possible adoption. Please check our web site for all our animals currently available for adoption.

**Last night a small white and brown pit mix girl was brought in as a stray from the Tomahawk area (we are not sure exactly where and are waiting on a location) She is wearing a pink collar. She has many porcupine quills in her face and is heading to the vet now to get them out.

(Will post a pic when she has the quills out)

Please share incase someone is looking for her.

She is a little nervous at first but is the sweetest girl. We have named her Lola.

When emotions are high, people often forget details they normally know by heart. A single organized file, folder or even on your phone helps you act quickly and accurately when every minute counts.
