Is your horse too fast or too slow?
Is your horse nervous or checked out?
Do you want to improve your feel?
Maybe you feel tense and disconnected with your horse and you'd like to get that connection back.

I think almost every equestrian dreams of THAT feeling:

You and your horse move together as one in harmony. There is lightness but steadiness underneath you. The reins feel soft and alive instead of heavy or dead.
The movement feels effortless and flowing.

The wind is in your face and your horse feels like that unicorn you've always dreamed of 🦄

And then reality shows up.

People start throwing around terms like:
Inside leg to outside rein.
Engagement, thoroughness, contact, being round, and connection.

And maybe you start thinking:
“My horse will never feel like that.”
Or worse:
“I don’t even know what they’re talking about, let alone how it’s supposed to FEEL.”

You are not alone and you do NOT have to be an advanced rider to start experiencing those “big” feelings.

You don’t need fancy movements.
You don’t need collection.
You don’t even need to trot.

Sometimes all it takes is learning how to notice and organize energy differently.

We can do that at the walk.
Even at the halt.
We can do it from the ground.

This week’s episode of The Thinking Horse and Rider talked about simple steps to make complicated moves. Now, if you want help experiencing that in real time, your podcast host, horse-human communication coach, and “sticky spot decoder” specialist Anna Fox is coming to Shining River Ranch June 13–15 for the Happy Horse (and Human) Camp. 💛

This camp is designed to help riders:
✨ improve feel
✨ build confidence
✨ understand horse behavior
✨ create softer communication
✨ and finally experience more flow with their horse

The missing pieces aren't always about trying harder, sometimes you just need to be aware of what's really holding you back. This learning retreat is designed to teach you from the ground up, with real awareness, how your brain and body work together (or don't). We'll explore the same awareness of what your horse's brain and body experience and do a little experimentation so you can actually FEEL changes taking place 🤗

Have you ever listened to The Thinking Horse and Rider podcast and thought…

“Okay, but I wish I could actually PRACTICE this with someone guiding me in real time?” 🐴✨

That’s exactly why I created the Happy Horse (and Human) Camp.

Because understanding concepts intellectually and actually FEELING them in your body are two very different things.

It’s one thing to hear:
➡️ “Use your energy differently.”
➡️ “Soften your body.”
➡️ “Feel the inside hind.”
➡️ “Notice your horse’s nervous system.”

It’s another thing entirely to:
✨ experience it
✨ experiment with it
✨ ask questions in the moment
✨ and finally feel the change happen underneath you

At camp, we slow things down enough for riders to actually NOTICE what’s happening.

Not just in the horse.
In themselves too.

We’ll play with:
💛 rider awareness
💛 groundwork
💛 nervous system regulation
💛 softness and feel
💛 horse behavior
💛 communication without force
💛 and how to organize energy without micromanaging

And no… you do NOT need to be an advanced rider.

Some of the biggest breakthroughs happen at the walk, standing still, or even from the ground.

If you’ve ever wanted to step inside the podcast and experience this work in real life…

This is your invitation. 💫

Your horse doesn't need drilling, you do.

So, train your brain to learn what it needs to feel and then start with a little, reward often, and say thank you! Horses are designed to learn quickly. They want to please. We are designed to cross-check everything, expect too much, and feel entitled to it. It's just human nature, you don't need to feel bad about it, but you can correct it.

Train your brain to work with your horse, not against them 💙🦄

One thing that plagues equestrians (and horses) of all levels is:
The Go, but don’t go, conundrum. At least that’s what I call it.

You tell the horse:
“Go forward.” …but not too forward.
“Be energetic.” …but stay slow.
Sometimes, it’s not even a conscious conundrum.

Your brain’s primary function is to keep you alive, whether you are a novice rider or an experienced one. So, if you have EVER felt unsafe in the saddle, your brain knows that and will course correct your actions to stay safe. Without you ever knowing it. This means a lot of riders are unconsciously holding the brake while pressing the gas pedal and your horse feels that contradiction immediately.
The leg says “go.”
The hand says “don’t.”
The seat says “I’m nervous.”
The mind says “please don’t do anything bad.”
That creates tension instead of flow.

Then we wonder why horses become:
• dull
• anxious
• behind the leg
• reactive
• or completely confused about what we want.

One of the hardest — and most important — parts of riding is learning how to allow energy without panicking about it. Don’t worry, impulsion and chaos are not the same thing and. You don’t have to go fast to “get over it”.

I loved this reflection from one of the riders who practiced my Breathe 4 Transitions exercise before the Happy Horse Day clinic:
“I noticed while I’m practiced at using my breath for downward transitions, my energy for upward transitions is super awkward and not as clear.”

That awareness is HUGE.

What’s that saying? “Awareness is half the battle.” Most riders are far more practiced at containing energy than allowing or creating it clearly, but they aren’t even aware of that problem.

Helping you become aware of what’s getting in your way is how I help you find more ease and clarity in your riding. Join us at the Happy Horse (and human) Camp to learn more and go deeper into how the brain and body work together.

Stop Riding Perfectly. Start Feeling.

Most riders are trying so hard to “look right” that they never give themselves permission to actually FEEL what’s happening. 👀🐴

And...feel is messy at first.

You over-ask.
You under-ask.
You wobble.
You experiment.
You figure out what changes the horse, and what doesn’t.
That’s how real understanding happens.

Don't we always say that dressage is DANCING with the horse. Then ride like you're learning to dance! Nobody looks smooth the first time they stop counting steps and actually try to feel the music. 💃

The magic happens in the experimenting. The messing up. The stepping on your partner's toes! I hear that once you get passed that point in dance lessons things become soft, balanced, and beautiful. (I wouldn't know because you wouldn't want to see me dance 🤣)

I love to see riders get curious rather than obsessed with looking perfect.
Because perfection often blocks feel.
Experimentation creates it. ✨

I think every horsewoman secretly wants the same thing. Besides the ribbons, the high scores, and the medals; we want "that feeling".

The one where your horse looks for you.
Where the rides feel light and alive and almost hard to explain.
Where people watch you ride and quietly wonder how your horse became so soft, so confident, so willing. I don’t think that kind of partnership comes from more force or more control. I think it comes from more understanding.

From learning how to listen.
How to notice.
How to regulate ourselves enough that our horses can finally exhale too.

That’s really what 🎙️ The Thinking Horse and Rider podcast is all about.
No perfection and no dominance, just real talk and learning how to create a relationship your horse actually wants to be part of.

If that sounds like the kind of horsemanship you’ve been craving, start with the podcast. Then come experience it in person with us at The Happy Horse (and human) Camp.

Can you get the inside hind under - just by thinking about it?

🎧 Ten Minute Tuesday Experiment: Can You Get That Inside Hind to Step Under… Just By Thinking It?

This week, we’re playing with the HQ yield from the podcast episode, Inside Leg to Outside Rein Explained (3 Exercises to Finally FEEL It).

This isn’t just about moving the hindquarters, it's a building block.

👉 Start at the halt - before you do anything!

Think: “turn left" or "turn right". Because if you are turning left, the left hind should step under. If you're turning right, the right hind steps under.

Then, ask your horse the question:

👉 “Can you step that inside hind under?”

---

Now here’s where the experiment really starts:

Don’t jump straight to stronger aids.

Use your energy ladder.

Start with the lightest thing you can imagine.

If your horse doesn’t respond:

• slide your inside leg slightly back

• maybe brush their side

• maybe a tiny tap tap tap

Not a squeeze.

Squeezing usually makes horses brace or push against you.

We want:

👉 “Could you move away from this?”

not

👉 “Push harder into pressure.”

---

If your horse walks forward instead of stepping under…

Lift your inside rein up slightly.

Not back.

Not pulling.

Just enough to help shift the shoulders so the hind end has room to step under.

The second your horse even tries?

Release.

Big release.

---

✨ What you’re really teaching

You’re teaching your horse:

• to listen to lighter aids

• to search for answers

• to stay mentally connected

• and eventually… to respond to your energy before your pressure

That’s the magic.

---

🔁 Remember: refine the skill

Don’t just “get it done.”

Keep making it:

• lighter

• easier

• clearer

Over time, your horse starts recognizing the game faster.

One day you’ll think:

👉 “Hey… what do you do when I shift like this?”

And instead of confusion…

Your horse will go:

👉 “Oh! You mean this?”

That’s where things start getting really fun.

This week, don’t focus on making the movement bigger.

Focus on making the conversation quieter.

Because the softer the question, the more beautiful the answer can become.

05/18/2026

How many times have you heard “inside leg to outside rein”… but still secretly had NO idea what it was supposed to feel like? 👀🐴

Same.

Most riders are taught the theory long before they ever experience the feeling in their horse’s body. So we end up:
❌ pulling on the outside rein
❌ micromanaging the shoulders
❌ trying to fake connection instead of creating it

In this episode of The Thinking Horse and Rider, I’m sharing 3 simple exercises that help riders finally FEEL the connection between the inside hind leg, outside shoulder, and outside aids.

Because once you feel it… everything changes. ✨

I think every rider dreams of that feeling when your horse feels light underneath you. Where the reins feel soft and alive in your hands instead of heavy and the movement feels effortless and flowing.

Where the wind is in your face and your horse feels less like the one-thousand pound beast they are and more like a flying pegasus that could carry you forever.

And then reality shows up. People start talking to you about all the connections you need to have before you can have that grand feeling; inside leg to outside rein, engagement, throughness, lightness.

Maybe you think, my horse will never feel that way or; I have no idea what they are talking about, let alone how it should FEEL. That's ok. It's perfect even!

You do not have to be an advanced rider to start experiencing those “big” feelings.
You don’t need fancy movements.
You don’t need collection.
You don’t even need to trot.

Sometimes all it takes is learning how to notice and organize energy differently. We can do that at the walk and halt (psssst....it's also usually more effective than whatever your advanced barn buddies are doing running around the arena in circles).

This week’s episode of The Thinking Horse and Rider is all about helping riders finally START to feel that inside leg to outside rein connection with 3 simple exercises that anyone can do.

Leave it to Kim to make a great connection ❤️

UPDATE: I find it very telling (in regard to our collective trauma around health and medical experiences) that almost all the comments in response to this post are about each individual's feelings and approaches around our healthcare system. Even though my request was for readers to share what felt relevant about this particular medical experience/exchange to the horse-human relationship and equestrianism...

This morning I went in for a routine mammogram. That may seem like an odd subject to write about on my business page, but bear with me.

It’s deeply relevant.

When I arrived at the medical center, the person behind the desk greeted me warmly and made the check-in process very easy. I was grateful for this.

I had arrived a few minutes early, but didn’t wait even five minutes before a nurse came to get me. She escorted me to the dressing room and explained simply what I needed to do to prepare.

Again, I didn’t have to wait long before the mammographer came to get me. More feelings of gratitude.

But as soon as she closed the door behind us in the screening room, she looked me directly in the eye and asked sharply, “Have you had a mammogram anywhere else since the last one you had done here?”

The feelings of gratitude immediately morphed into a hard,
protective shield around my heart. My heartbeat quickened. Feelings of fear, guilt and embarrassment started rising up, but I managed to hold them at bay.

I have my reasons. Every healthcare choice I make is a conscious one. And this woman knew next to nothing about me or my life.

I took a breath and calmly met her gaze. “No,” I replied.

She pointed a finger toward me, raised her voice slightly, and said, “Shame on you!”

I held her gaze and said simply, “That’s not helpful. I’m here now.”

She paused for a beat as my words landed. Then her entire demeanor softened.

A few moments later, she admitted that even though she works there, she was also late getting her own mammogram done.

“I understand,” I said compassionately. “Life is challenging to navigate these days.”

We both nodded.

And then we got on with the business I was there for.

When she finished capturing the images she needed, she kindly explained the next steps and when/how I’d receive my results. She made a point to tell me that if further screening is needed, she will be the one who calls me directly.

And honestly, I found it comforting to know it wouldn’t be a complete stranger on the other end of the line if I do receive that call.
__________
Now… who wants to tell me how this story might relate to our relationships with horses, and with our fellow equestrians?

What shifts become possible when we can stay present, set a clear boundary, and still allow space for reconnection? And isn't that exactly the kind of relational intelligence horses respond to as well?

This photo was taken when I was meeting a new friend at Project ComeBack this spring.
