Calvin is coming alive, no more of the blank eyes, scared, gotta go gotta go gotta go look. He is choosing when to go outside and coming back inside when he is ready! And my favorite part is he is playful, the tail is up, curled and wagging! He has also started to play with the other dogs! 🥰

🐾 HAPPY NATIONAL DOG DAY! 🐾❤️

National Dog Day is a reminder to recognize the unconditional love, loyalty, companionship, and joy that dogs bring into our lives—and to shine a light on the millions of dogs still waiting for a family to call their own. 🏡🐾

For our furry family members, National Dog Day means more than extra treats and belly rubs. It means **being loved, protected, respected, cared for, and given the chance to simply be a dog.** It means understanding their needs, celebrating their quirks, providing enrichment and exercise, keeping them safe, and remembering that they depend on us for their entire lives.

And for the dogs still waiting in shelters, rescues, boarding facilities, and foster homes, today is a reminder that their day is coming, too.❤️

🐾 **Adopt when you can.
🐾 **Foster when you're able.
🐾 **Donate when you can’t foster.
🐾 **Share an adoptable dog.
🐾 **Advocate for the ones who have no voice.
🐾 **And love the dog beside you like they’re the greatest gift they are.

Because to a dog, you are their whole world.🌎❤️

Happy National Dog Day to every muddy-pawed, couch-stealing, tail-wagging, treat-loving, goofy, loyal, unforgettable dog out there! 🐕✨

**Today, let’s celebrate dogs—and help make sure every dog gets the love and forever home they deserve.** 🏡🐾

🧡🐾 You Can Save a Life Without Leaving Your Couch !
Just Click "SHARE."

Right now, shelters across the country are facing space crises. Behind every kennel door is a dog like the one in this photo—a loving animal hoping for a family. In 2025 alone, 4.2 million shelter pets were adopted, but nearly 600,000 animals were still euthanized 💔 because they ran out of time. Your voice can change that.

Social media advocacy is a powerful force. Sharing an adoptable pet's profile introduces them to people who may never visit a physical shelter. If just 1 out of 17 people planning to get a pet chose adoption instead of purchase, we could eliminate shelter overcrowding entirely. It’s not just a post; it’s a connection.

You have the power to bridge the gap. Please, take 1️⃣ minute and follow a local rescue or shelter. When you see an adoption profile, don't just "like" it—SHARE it. That one simple click can be the direct reason a dog finds their true forever home. Be their advocate today. 🐶🏠

Little Otis arrived at Big Paws K9 Foster House today thanks to our volunteer drivers! He is settling in, had short introductions to all the other dogs. Calvin seems to think we got him a puppy! 🤭🥰

I am excited to see what we learn about this handsome dude!

We did an initial vet visit last week and we have another scheduled for 3 weeks.

You can apply to adopt him, but he won’t be available to leave just yet.

Sweet Finley girl! 🥰

🥰 Theo is loosening up and has started playing! It is very clear when he is feeling uncomfortable you can see it in his 👀. He’s not been reactive at all with watching his signals assuring him he’s safe and then allowing him to go to his safe space! 🩷 he’s learned sit, down, stay, up, and he enjoys walks out to the bayou.

🐾 RESOURCE GUARDING is more COMMON than you Think 🧐🐾

Resource guarding is a behavior where a dog feels the need to protect something they consider valuable—food, treats, toys, beds, space, or even a favorite person. You may see freezing, stiffening, hard staring, growling, showing teeth, or snapping when someone approaches. It’s important to understand that these behaviors are often rooted in insecurity, fear, stress, or a learned belief that something valuable might be taken away. Punishing a dog for warning you can actually make the situation worse by teaching them to skip the warning signs.

💙 **Understanding the behavior is the first step toward helping the dog.** Management, patience, predictable routines, positive-reinforcement training, and professional guidance can make a tremendous difference. In rescue especially, we have to remember that a dog entering a new environment may be overwhelmed and unsure of what is expected of them. Give them time to decompress, learn their new surroundings, and build trust. Resource guarding doesn't automatically mean a dog is unadoptable—but it does mean we need to be honest about the behavior, provide the right support, and match that dog with a home prepared to continue the work. Every dog deserves a chance to be understood. 🐾❤️
