As I load my gear to leave early in the am to start my 2025-2026 season there has been a lot of moving parts to get to this point. This sign was hung in Roberts shop when we were loading things up changing locations.
There is a lot of emotion behind them words on that sign!
I’m not a guy known to take big risks but this one felt right! I’ve got nothing to lose and a lot to Prove and I’ll do just that!
Thank you to all WCI customers and my friends and family!
Cheers to 2025-2026 season! Follow Western Cats on Instagram and Facebook to follow my journey!

What do you carry in your skinning kit? I showed the wrong cable cutters, I have a bigger pair that I use for taking jaws. Have I missed anything?

Mineral bucket versus 6 gal milk creates! Next week I’m leaving for a long line 300 miles away and instead of using milk creates as I normally use for my traps on shorter lines, I am using mineral buckets so I have room for everything else I will need on the line. This bucket holds 70, #2 traps verses 20 traps the milk create holds. One thing to consider though is weight, a pound is still a pound. The bucket takes up less surface space but the weight is drastically increased. I just replaced my leaf springs on the Tacoma because of a weight problem! Pro tip! Put bucket where you want it then put your traps in! 70 traps has some weight to it!

Some trappers ask, do you really need a 4 coiled trap! On some of our lines we have heavy clay, and when it rains then freezes, you need that extra power to come up through frozen ground with the speed to make the catch! In my opinion it’s worth the extra cost!

There’s not a better sight than to see a tight cable when pulling up to your set location!

Airmass movement versus prevailing wind! This video shows an example of a rising action caused by the suns heat. This is evaporation and is similar to airmass movement. The sun heats the ground during the daytime and after the sun goes down heat is still being released by the earth’s surface, carrying your lures scent molecules with the rising air. However it only rises until the rising air temperature is equal to the surrounding air temperature. Then through the coarse of the night as the surrounding air temperatures drops the airmass drops as well, similar to a fog bank seeking the lowest spot in the general location. The area between your set and the lowest spot in the general location is what I call an invisible lure fence, any predator that crosses through that fence will wind your lures scent and go upwind to the lure’s source. Now prevailing wind. Prevailing wind is a daytime phenomenon. The sun heats the earths surface then as the surface air rises it causes breezes and out west they are generally out of the southwest. After the sun sets these breezes slow down and stop. Most predators that I catch are at night when prevailing winds are at a standstill. When we have a low pressure system approaching we then get winds and there is not much we can do about them. Set the high spots within your general location and chances are you will get more predators to wind your sets.
