Green Thumb Thursday 🪴

Plant of the week: Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata)

The snake plant is one of many plants that are good for amphibians such as white’s tree frogs. It offers them great hiding and climbing spaces and are renowned for their air purifying qualities. The plant is also quite hardy and can tolerate the humidity and temperature fluctuations typical of a white’s tree frog habitat! Don’t forget to quarantine your plants for a couple of weeks before adding them to any enclosure to ensure they are pest free!

Fun Fact: Unique to the Komodo dragon, and just a few other reptile species, is the ability to reproduce asexually through parthenogenesis, which means that unfertilized ova grow into embryos. This adaptation allows a single female to enter a new island and produce male offspring, establishing a sexually reproducing population.

For ages, these legendary creatures have intrigued us, from the Leviathan found in ancient texts to the Jörmungandr from Norse tales. They embody the mysteries and terrifying might of the sea.

Countless sailors have recounted sightings, describing enormous, slithering forms and fearsome heads emerging from the water.

What’s That? Wednesday 🧐

We had the awesome opportunity to look at a lot of different reptile skins, bird feathers, insect body parts, and more under microscopes at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center! Do you know what reptile this skin belongs to? Hint: it’s a species of snake!

Last week was our Rankins dragon, Fizzarolli! Although he’s small he is mighty..well, at least his attitude is. 😆 He only lets our 7 year old hold him without fussing but we all love him so much!
