šŸ«¶šŸ¼ It’s Go Home Day for Miss Cotton, our pick of the litter from our handsome Goose & Itty Bitty’s beautiful Bristol’s litter.

Raise your hand in the comments if you think Itty Bitty Dachshunds should let this pairing happen ONE MORE TIME before retiring Bristol 🤣🤣🤣

🧬 Let’s Talk DAPPLE! 🧬

Dapple is one of the most recognizable patterns in dachshunds, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Not to sound like a broken record but…

✨ Dapple is a PATTERN, not a color.

A dachshund can be:
• Black & Tan Dapple
• Chocolate & Tan Dapple
• Cream Dapple
• Red Dapple

šŸ‘‰šŸ¼The color describes the dog. The dapple describes the pattern.

Now for one of the biggest misconceptions…

🚫 Dapple CANNOT be ā€œcarried.ā€ 🚫

Unlike genes such as cream, chocolate or long hair, a dog either IS dapple or it ISN’T.

šŸ”µ Blue Eyes = Dapple NOT DAPPLE CARRIER

There is no such thing as:
āŒ ā€œCarries dappleā€
āŒ ā€œCannot carry dappleā€

If a dog has the dapple gene, it will express the dapple pattern in some form.

The catch? Some dapples can be very difficult to identify visually. This is especially true in heavily shaded reds, creams, and certain long coats. That’s why reputable breeders often utilize DNA testing to confirm whether a dog is dapple.

āš ļø Why does this matter?

Because breeding two dapple dogs together can produce Double Dapples.

Double Dapple is not simply a ā€œmore spottedā€ or ā€œflashyā€ dapple. It occurs when a puppy inherits a dapple gene from BOTH parents.

Double Dapples are at significantly higher risk for:
• Vision defects
• Hearing defects
• Missing or malformed eyes
• Microphthalmia (abnormally small eyes)
• Other developmental abnormalities

This is why responsible breeders work hard to identify dapple dogs correctly and avoid double dapple breedings.

🧪 DNA testing has become an invaluable tool in breeding programs. Sometimes what looks obvious isn’t and sometimes what doesn’t look dapple at all actually is.

At the end of the day, genetics don’t care what we think we see in a picture.

They care what’s actually in the DNA.

🐾 Knowledge protects the breed.

Friendly little educational post because I keep seeing this come up lately. I am by no means an expert BUT I can confidently classify colors and patterns, if I’m unsure on a color I test them. šŸ¤”

PIEBALD is NOT a color, it’s a pattern.
DAPPLE is NOT a color, it’s also a pattern.

A dachshund’s color and pattern are two separate things.

For example:
• Black & Tan Piebald
• Chocolate & Tan Dapple
• Red Piebald
• Cream Dapple

The white from piebald is never included when naming the color. It’s not ā€œblack, tan & white piebald.ā€ The piebald already implies white spotting. And pleaseeee… ā€œtri-color piebaldā€ is not an actual color designation in the dachshund breed šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

There’s also a LOT of confusion between creams and reds and honestly? Sometimes that can be difficult in young puppies, especially depending on lighting. I’ve even questioned them myself before.

That’s exactly why color testing exists & I try to keep single testing swabs on hand.

Personally, I’d much rather label a puppy as a red and have it mature into a cream than advertise it as a cream and have it turn out red later.

Breeding responsibly means continuing to learn, research, test and educate, because accurate representation matters.

We are so excited to officially introduce Kandie & Banx’s very first litter together!

These two absolutely knocked it out of the park and blessed us with four gorgeous babies and we are completely obsessed.

This litter is everything we hoped for and more. Beautiful cream babies, sweet as can be & already stealing hearts.

A huge thank you to our friends at B & B Dachshunds for allowing us to be part of this special pairing. We have a feeling this won’t be the last time these two create something magical together.

And while one very special puppy from this litter will be staying here with us…

There may be a darling little girl who could be looking for the perfect lap to call her own. šŸ’—

Stay tuned… more details coming soon.

✨ Same Puppy. Different Lighting. ✨

One thing I always like to remind families when viewing newborn puppy photos, lighting can dramatically change the way a puppy appears, especially creams.

Cream puppies are particularly tricky to photograph. Depending on the lighting, they may appear:

ā˜€ļø Bright cream or nearly white in natural sunlight
šŸ“ø Richer gold or reddish indoors
šŸ’” Darker and warmer toned inside a photo box, even with LED lights

The two photos below are of the exact same puppy, taken just minutes apart in different lighting conditions.

As puppies grow, their coats continue to change and can often darken or lighten significantly over time

At Double W Doxies, we do our best to capture each puppy as accurately as possible by taking them outside for pictures in a safe space, but sometimes Mother Nature and indoor lighting have other plans. šŸ˜…

No matter the lighting, one thing stays the same… this little cream boy is absolutely precious. 🩵🐾

Stay tuned… this tiny guy has a big future ahead.

We’re hard at work laying the groundwork for future pairings here at Double W Doxies. Responsible breeding is about so much more than putting two dogs together in hopes of producing a certain color or pattern. Every pairing is carefully planned with purpose and intention. We evaluate structure, temperament, health, genetics & how each dog complements the other. The goal is to produce puppies that are not only beautiful but healthier, sounder and better representatives of the breed.

We don’t breed simply to have puppies.

If you’re not intentionally working to better the breed with every pairing, you’re missing the whole point.

And if all goes as planned… you’ll want to stay tuned. šŸ‘€

We’ve got exciting plans in the works for upcoming long hair pairings, possibly a smooth coat litter and maybe a silky litter as well

If you’d like more information or want to be added to our priority waitlist or notify list, send us a text at 903-423-3213.

ā€œI don’t need another silky right nowā€

I keep telling my self this BUT every time I get updated pics of Cotton it gets harder for me to repeat and believe it. I know I’m going to regret not keeping her, someone better sn**ch her up before my impulsive ways win 🤣
