Tip of the week: Your dog is never done learning.
Many people think training ends once their dog learns "sit," "down," or "stay." The truth is, dogs continue learning throughout their entire lives! Every walk, interaction, and experience teaches your dog something. Every step outside can feel like a whole new journey. That's why it's important to continue practicing training, reinforcing good behaviors, and introducing new challenges. It doesn't matter how old your dog is, and what you want them to learn next!
Older dogs can learn new tricks. You can challenge them by adding something new to it. Maybe you want to do trickdog with the AKC or Do More With Your dog? Or one of the FitDog courses to keep their muscles good. Young dogs need ongoing guidance to navigate through the world and learn new skills to cope with our busy lives. Even highly trained dogs benefit from regular practice to keep their skills sharp. A well-trained dog isn't a finished project. It's a lifelong journey between you and your best friend.
Think of training like going to the gym. If you stop exercising, your muscles become weaker. The same is true for your dog's obedience and manners. Regular training sessions, even just 5 to 10 minutes a day, can make a huge difference. And it makes everyone's life more enjoyable. As long as you keep training fun and reward good choices, your dog will stay engaged with you. Make learning a part of everyday life to keep a routine going.
