Located in Northern Virginia, Friends of Homeless Animals has been serving the Washington metropolitan area since 1973. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) no-kill shelter dedicated to saving abandoned and abused dogs and cats. We provide rescue, medical care, rehabilitation, and adoption services in the Northern Virginia and Washington, DC metropolitan areas.

Hi, I’m Max! I’m a handsome, independent guy with all the classic Chow charm — a little reserved, a little mysterious, and perfectly happy doing my own thing. I love my walks and I’m super easy on leash — no pulling, just strolling and sniffing like a pro. I’m looking for an experienced, confident adopter who understands my breed and respects a dog who likes his space. Once we’ve got that mutual understanding, we’ll get along just fine. Meet Cash Money Records, a 6-year-old, 64lb male Boxer mix! He’s a sweet and playful boy who loves being with his people. He enjoys playing with toys and chasing balls around the yard and really loves going for walks. He’s also very happy to snuggle up with his favorite humans, get lots of pets, and take naps on the couch. He would like to find a home where someone is around often so he doesn’t have to spend too much time alone and can get out for daily adventures. He would like a family who is patient and understands he still needs work on his leash manners and his tendency to counter surf if food is left out. Meet Novella, a 3-year-old female mixed breed! She’s a sweet girl who loves people, treats, and playing! She can take a little while to warm up to new people, but once she does, she loves getting love and affection. She’s house-trained and crate-trained and has done well with older children. She is a bit touch sensitive, so would do best with a patient adopter who understands she will need time to adjust to new people and situations to avoid getting overwhelmed. Happy Mother's Day from FOHA to all the moms out there! It doesn't matter how many legs your kids have, if you consider them your babies and you love them and watch out for their well being, you deserve a day of recognition. We know how hard you work all year long. Enjoy your day!

Special shout out to our FOHA foster moms. These incredible superheroes continually take new fosters into their homes, lose a piece of their heart when the foster gets adopted, and repeat when the next vulnerable animal comes in. Thank you for all you do and the part you play in helping FOHA save the lives of countless dogs, puppies, cats and kittens. Wishing you a well deserved special day!

Bette Boo spent 11 years in the same home before losing her owner and the only environment she had ever known. After several months in foster care, she has settled into a steady routine and is showing adopters exactly who she is. During the day, Bette Boo naps in her bed and checks in every few hours. She vocalizes as she moves, offering soft commentary while she follows her person through the house. At bedtime, she sleeps pressed alongside you for the night. She is looking for a household where she can be your only cat and build a steady, one-on-one bond again.

Hi, I’m Nelson! I’m a super smart and energetic dog who absolutely loves to play fetch—just say the word “ball” and I’m all in, ready to chase and bring it right back to you. Water is my other favorite thing—I love getting sprayed with the hose! I do best in an active home with an experienced owner who can help me channel my energy and intelligence through training and play. A large fenced backyard would be my dream spot to run and chase balls until I’m happily tuckered out. Because I can be unpredictable and shy around strangers, I need a calm, patient family with no kids under 16, and no cats.
