I remember the crying cat journey to drive Billy thousands of miles to my aunt who had lost her cat and fell for his photos. He was slow to warm up to her. I told her he would be all over her in a few weeks! Told you so! He LOVES her!! It has been about 3 years now. Great match! πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠ

In college I petsat for my professor's lovely Springer Barney. I petsat him after Thanksgiving day. I had to rush sweet Barney to the emergency veterinary hospital because he must have eaten turkey bones from a distracted guest or from the trash. Barney was passing blood and sharp shards of bone. Barney was fine luckily but let this story remind you to keep your pets safely away from guests' chaos and toxic holiday foods. Our festivities are often stressful for our pets. Keep them with appropriate chews and treats in a safe area away for the festivities. You can take turns spending time and supervising pets and ensuring guests don't pester or feed your pets. Most people don't understand or recognize stress behaviors in pets or know what foods and other items may be toxic to your pets. Many a bite has happened at a family holiday gathering or party. Keep the furries safe and calm.

My profession- I am a dog behavior counselor and trainer who uses force-free, relationship-based methods.
I’ve worked with fear issues, reactivity, separation distress, anxiety, over-arousal, aggression, and puppy/family-dog skills. I’ve also managed an animal shelter, taught training classes, conducted private consults, presented seminars for decades, and worked with rescued mill dogs and other "special" animals from the beginning.

Yes, dogs and cats can be explorers that love new outings or homebodies that prefer familiar environments. Early development gentle socialization can help tip the scales more towards the bold explorer. Some will be more inclined to favor familiar safe spaces regardless. We must accept this and work within the individual dog's spectrum. There are exceptions but looking at what the breed was bred for often has influence on this I think. Were they bred to watch over the property? Were they bred to be more independent in new environments? But even within a breed there will be a lot of individual difference. Look at how two siblings growing up in the same house may be incredibly different from each other.

Looking great. Notice how the dogs seem calm and not pushed. Notice the difference with other videos. I bet this was done nice and gradual within the dog's comfort level.

I was so thrilled with this episode I am sharing it on all my pages. This is for deaf dogs but honestly I think it is the best advice for all animals! I love her perspective. I am very impressed, which is unusual after all these years. There is a section on not startling or surprising your animals, which is great. I will add that I recommend trying to avoid waking or disrupting a resting animal. If you must do so, and you probably do not have to, then gently do so from a distance patiently, let the animal orient gradually then rolling over a tasty treat is a fabulous idea. Feel free to do that for me too as I will instantly dislike anyone waking or disturbing me. πŸ˜‰ Have a listen. Reminder- Halloween costumes and decorations can be terrifying for many animals. Keep your animals in quiet area away from sight, sounds, and reach of Halloween activities. You can give out treats out front of your home and have someone with your animals in safe and calm areas well out of the way. Take care to keep decorations and candy out of reach of your animals. Halloween is for people not animals.

I created this because I think we often talk about dogs a little too human centered. Dogs don’t need us to learn, think, or be social. We have the privilege of living with them and need to provide them with replacements for what they would get on their own with more options in their environment such as in the natural world with no confinement. I applaud doing fun training and getting dogs out in nature and giving them lots of opportunities to explore. For most dogs getting out hiking on quiet trails is awesome. Renting a sniffspot to let them explore. This is great for most dogs. Some dogs from deprivation backgrounds may not enjoy these settings but they are the exception and other accommodations can be made for them. I have always stressed the importance of getting your dogs into uncrowded nature as much as you can. Even in cities there are usually options. It is important to give your dog freedom to make choices and observe as objectively as possible to understand what makes your dog thrive. My first pup as an adult loved exploring new natural settings, my next dog liked her own big fenced yard and familiar trails, my next dog loved exploring nature, loved meeting new people, and learning new things. My dog after that was more of a homebody preferring his big fenced yard, learning new things at home, and walking around his rural neighborhood. Some loved the car and some just tolerated it. Take the "I" out of it to get perspective.
