Had a great day yesterday in Waynesboro, GA at a cow clinic. We took a full load of 7 horses and spent the day out there. Super impressed with all the horses being that most of them had never seen cows😅 Proud of these girls for riding their horses so well too! Great note to end on with 3 of my client horses leaving today.
Thanks to Marc Chancey for putting it on!

Series of yesterday’s session with Goldie captured by OKK8Y Art & Design / Katy Sestay

This mare wasn’t thrilled with the traffic in the arena while I was giving lessons yesterday. Once she realized it wasn’t a threat, she had a complete change in attitude. She’s been a bit more of a challenge being that she’s getting a late start at 8, but it’s been a fun experience. She’s a stinkin smart mare.

Nothing super impressive but if I’d have got a before video, y’all would be as impressed as I am!
“Dixie” came in as a problem horse just over 20 days ago. She was hot, angry, & just not enjoying herself. We immediately got her teeth done, treated her for ulcers, & had her adjusted. Just to be able to lope pretty circles on a loose rein is huge progress! Thankful to her owner for trusting me with her & super excited to see what they can accomplish together now that she’s on the right path! I’ve enjoyed working with both horse & owner. I think problem horses might just be my favorite to work with. The results are so satisfying.

“Indy” 3yo TB client filly. I’m a hugeee fan of this little mare. She’s going so well. Excited to see what she decides she wants to do. Her owners are thinking maybe a barrel horse? I’m thinking she’d make a nice lil polo pony 😎 We’ll see!!

Hot tub was giving my horse holder a little hell but he handled it well 🤣

First time loping for the 2yo Clydesdale x colt, “Bud”! He’s a little lazy so figured the field would be the best place to get some forward momentum🤣 such a cool little guy!!

“Goldie” the newest client horse in the barn! Can you say holy color??🔥 have her in for 30 days to get started.

Couldn’t have asked for a better 1st ride on “Bud” this morning! What a cool little guy. He’s going to be so fun to get going.

He & two of my other client horse’s got their teeth done this afternoon. I cannot emphasize the importance of good dental care enough! I ask for client horses to be sent to me with their teeth UTD or I’m more than happy to set it up when they get here. But don’t expect that to be something you can skip out on if you want your horse to succeed!! It’s so so so important.

I just had a spot open up for ONE more outside horse this month! 15-45 days. I am leaving for Wyoming at the end up June for two months. (Possibly open to taking a client horse or two with me for anyone that may be interested😉 they get BROKE out there!)

Buck Brannaman, Horseman

Buck Brannaman, Horseman

“We let our horses push us around too much,” Buck Brannaman tells us. He’s in a round pen, working with a woman’s bay colt that keeps trying to push into Buck’s space. “I would never let my horse get this bad.”
The colt’s owner, who’s standing just outside the round pen fence, calls out to Buck, “He has tantrums!”
“No he doesn’t,” Buck replies. “He doesn’t know what’s to be expected of him. Nobody ever said to this horse, ‘Hey! Get off of me!’ I’m dealing with people problems here, not horse problems.”
Finally, the colt moves easily along with Buck and his horse. Buck hops off his horse and goes to the colt.
“No hard feelings,” he softly tells the young horse, petting him on the forehead. “It’s just the way it works.”

The excerpt is from a clinic report written by Kathleen McFarren. The full article can be found here - http://www.ridemagazine.com/horse/article/buck-brannaman-whispering-loudly-and-clearly

Image of Buck is by Ron Volmershausen and was taken at a Colt Starting clinic that was held in Wingen, Australia 1995.

04/22/2020

Here lately, I’ve been getting asked the question “what is your method?”
Truthfully, I’m not entirely sure how to answer that one. I can’t say I have any one method for every single horse. I believe that’s the thing with horses. Adaptivity. What works on one horse, may not work on another.

I can’t say my methods come solely from any one place. I’m no die hard Clinton Anderson fan. I won’t call myself a natural horsemanship trainer. I’m not one specific discipline with one molded idea for every horse.

I come from a polo background but grew up showing hunter jumpers and running barrels, etc. I’ve worked under/for several different trainers in different disciplines in different parts of the country. My parents train for a living but have vastly different styles, both with successful outcomes. I believe there’s something to learn from anyone and everyone in the horse world. Even if it’s what NOT to do. But again, lots of ways to skin a cat (can we all agree that this is a terrible saying??).

I like the fluidity of the handle in a polo horse, the collected correctness of an English horse, the total body control of barrel horses, the mind of trail horses, etc. Everything I do is a combination of so many different methods, disciplines, and ideas. I have my own methods that I’ve tried over the years and formed based off what did and didn’t work.

I’ve had horses that I was riding by day 3 of having been saddled. I’ve had horses that took two weeks of ground work before I was on them. Horses that had 10 rides in the round pen before they were ready to ride outside, but I’ve also had some that took 2 rides. They will tell you what they can handle, what they’re ready for, & what doesn’t work for them. They’re not machines. They have a mind of their own. Treat them like an individual.

The most limiting thing you can be in this business is close minded.

“Mojo” is almost done with his 14 day tune up!This big guy is older & blind in one eye. He was a rescue with a remotely unknown history & I was to find out if he could be a good trail horse. He’s a cool dude!

I do offer services for evaluating/fixing “problem” horses. Though you must be willing to rule out all pain first. We started out getting this horse chiropracted after he initially showed some discomfort & it made a night & day difference. Horses generally aren’t bad just for the sake of being bad!

I will have openings for outside horses starting middle of this month. Colt starting, General miles, problem horses, conditioning/sales prep, patterning, etc. Multiple horse/multiple month discounts.

Throwin’ something positive on y’all’s feed with this throwback to last year. Little schooling session in a bosal on my personal horse, Caddi. Bummed this mare didn’t ever like polo. Can you say handy?? Fortunately, she found her niche in barrel racing & genuinely seems to enjoy it. I believe ever horse deserves to have a job they enjoy!
