Joseph Pilates Tribute

https://www.facebook.com/JosephPilatesTribute/videos/1702280440097708/

Can't wait to see this movie! I'm so grateful to have discovered Pilates - it's never too late to change your body and develop strength in your core - what a difference it's made in my life on so many levels! Come visit Aiken Pilates Studio and see why Pilates instructors are so passionate about what we teach!

A man, over 100 years ago, created something that is still news to so many people nowadays.

Some people say it was a gift, others call him a genius.

And all we want is to honor him. A Tribute to Joseph Pilates and his Method.

Thomas

Thank you for your kind words, Tom. It's a joy and a privilege to work with someone so attuned to their body and breath.

Throughout my adult life I have sought out physical conditioning and training on simple and complex levels. I have used SOMA, deep tissue massage, Cranio-Sacral therapy, and Structural Integration (Rolfing) all to my benefit. For the past four weeks I have been receiving Pilates instruction from Maria Glinski, DVM. It has been life changing for me. The level of care and patience Maria shows her folks should be s standard for all health care practitioners. Pilates gently reprograms the most basic core structure of the body so that it eventually becomes the "new normal", allowing greater balance, stability and ease of movement. Maria instructs and guides with a great sense of humor, which makes all the difference in the world to me. I suggest this as a starting place in reforming your relationship with your body. Good stuff, very good stuff!

Photos from Aiken Pilates Studio's post

This evening I had the pleasure of teaching Pilates to the dancers from the Southeast Ballet Theatre. What a group of strong, flexible young dancers! Pilates is such a fabulous system for core strengthening - creating long lean muscles while stabilizing the shoulder girdle and pelvis - all essential for dancers. Such an honor to be chosen as the official Pilates coach for this group of talented athletes! Thank you Anna Lewis - what a great job you've done creating and directing SBT. Can't wait to see your first performance!

This is such a great post that emphasizes the need for an independent seat - that's the beauty of Pilates for riders - isolation of body parts - a strong core allows a rider to develop independent seat, legs and hands. What a lovely way to describe the emotional connection with the horse.

WHY are there relatively few riders who can take an insecure OTTB, and turn it into a bold and confident horse some years later? (This was Rosie's Girl at 4, about as timid and insecure and nervous as they came. Now she is bold and confident at intermediate, about as brave as any we have had in 50 years. See the photos of her at GMHA last weekend.)

Well, I am going to give what I think is the most honest answer I know, but it is not going to win me any popularity contests, because it contains a truth that people love to hate.

I am going to work backwards----

The best way I know to turn a scared Rosie's Girl type into a confident Rosie's Girl later is to ride her in a sympathetic way.

This involves two types of sympathy, an easy one and a hard one.

First the easy one: Take time, Build her "like an onion" one layer at a time, making sure her understanding of your aids corresponds to her fitness that makes it possible for her to actually do what she understands that you want.

Step by step, day by quiet day, week by quiet week, month by quiet month, avoiding coercion, being patient. It is a system of soft repetition, as she learns what you ask, and understands that what you ask doesn't scare or hurt her.

But now the hard one: YOU, the actual rider, the one on her back, must have soft, elastic, sympathetic, following hands, because that mouth is a tender place, easily hurt, easily made uncomfortable, easily ruined.

And that is not the hard part to which I allude, not yet---

IN ORDER to have soft, elastic, sympathetic, following hands, you must have a secure but soft and elastic independent seat, so that you are so much a part of the motion created by the moving back of the horse that your body and the horse's body appear as one entity.

Or, as my USET coach, Jack Le Goff, rhetorically asked, "What are the three things you must have in order to become a good rider?"

Then he would answer his own question, "1. A good seat. 2. A good seat. 3. A good seat."

Most riders simply do not possess an independent seat which allows them to "be" part of the motion of the living, breathing, moving entity upon which they are perched.

So they are some degree of insecure. So their hands are some degree of unsteady. So they make the horse insecure and unsteady.

And all over the world, riding teachers, the "orthodox" ones, preach this truth, that the "Open Sesame" to becoming a truly "good rider" depends upon the acquisition of an independent, non-bouncing seat, with or without stirrups, with or without posting, and all over the world, riders by the hundreds and thousands push back against this stark reality.

OK, I said what I really think. Hate me! hahahahahaha

You’ll never guess what this is used for…

I've been using the OOV for the past six months at the studio and it has totally revolutionized my results. I can't imagine teaching without this effective tool. It takes you immediately into neutral pelvis, protects your low back and intensively activates your deepest layer of core muscles -- all at the same time! Hope you enjoy these videos.

I know what you’re thinking… And no…you haven’t suddenly stumbled onto an adult website. So…what does this thing have to do with health & fitness

6 Breathing Exercises to Reduce Stress

This is a great article on the benefits of focused breathing. For those of you who have worked with me in the Pilates studio, you already know how essential it is to connect your breathing to the core strengthening exercises.

To effectively combat stress, we must activate the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which is known as the relaxation response. The prime goal of this response is to trigger the “rest and digest” response and bring the body back to homeostasis following fight-or-flight. Learn how to reduce stre...

The Development of the Rider's Position

This is one of the best descriptions I've seen on correct seat development. Pilates is one of the most effective ways to develop the core strength necessary to have truly independent seat and legs! Our Monday night group class at 6:30 pm focuses on core strength for serious riders.

A description of the development of the rider's position in order to be able to both maintain balance on a horse independently of the reins, and bring the horse's movement into balance posturally

Core stability for riding

This is a great article for riders. The core is so essential for stability in the saddle. Pilates is a great way to access and strengthen those deep under-used postural muscles.

More so than many other sports, core control in riding is paramount. However the concept of core stability is poorly understood by most people. Here we explain exactly what core stability means and how it relates to your riding.

Dr. Goldberg's work relates so well to riding. Pilates can help you with the bio-mechanical details of being an effective, symmetrical rider.

If you want your practices to be REALLY beneficial, then you have to pay attention to the important details as you go through them. You can't just have a “the lights are on but no one's home” mentality. Far too many athletes don't work enough on building a foundation of solid mechanics/technique when they train. They ignore these little, important details, and as a result, inadvertently end up setting themselves up for failure.

What Pilates teachers have to say about the Oov

Having an amazing weekend studying with Daniel Vladeta, DO in Peach Tree City, GA. Daniel is the developer of the "Oov" a cutting edge tool to help place a person in neutral spine with axial elongation. We will be integrating this tool into our private sessions on the mat and on the reformer. By using the Oov, we can accelerate a person's strengthening and mobilizing process exponentially. The Oov's unique design supports the curves of the spine; the instability activates the core stabilizers and the scapular cutaways allow full scapular mobility. The fact that the spine is supported also inhibits any compensatory movement, i.e., no "cheating" is possible.

Participants of the Oov for Pilates course talk about their first experiences on the Oov and how they feel they can apply this in their studios and with thei...

PILATES GROUP CLASSES WITH SPRING SPECIAL!

The Aiken Pilates & Wellness Center is offering four group Pilates classes for riders and active adults this spring - along with a Spring special offering. Whether you ride and compete at a high level in your discipline of choice or you are an avid trail rider, core strength is essential for establishing a stable seat and communicating clearly to your horse. If you don't ride but are active as a golfer, tennis player, runner, biker or hiker, Pilates can quickly make a dramatic difference in the success of your performance. Participants always comment on how much leaner and stronger they feel. You are guaranteed to move and stand with a new self-awareness after just one session. Emphasis will be placed on increasing deep core strength, improving hip mobility and stabilizing spine, shoulder and pelvic girdles.

Monday and Wednesday evenings 6:30-7:30 pm Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 1:00-2:00 pm

You can mix and match -- come as often as you like! These classes will be taught on the mat, ball, roller and barre. All equipment will be provided.

Studio renovations are officially complete! We are now booking private and group Pilates Monday through Friday. We can design customized core strengthening programs for serious dressage riders who want to improve their position scores or for trail riders who want to be more secure and confident in the saddle. Through the magic of Pilates, you can improve your posture, symmetry and balance in the saddle unlike any other fitness program. Most clients comment on the changes in their body after just one or two sessions!

My most FAQ - will you work with non-riders? Yes, absolutely! Pilates is also great for golfers, tennis players, bicyclists, runners and even hikers. No matter what your favorite activity is -- Pilates can make you faster, stronger, leaner and -- more competitive -- if that is important to you.

We also work with clients coming back from injuries or surgery. Pilates has been embraced in the physical therapy world as a great tool for rehab. The exercises can be modified so that you don't have to bear weight on your wrists, hands and knees. Many clients are concerned about neck or back strain during Pilates. There are multiple modifications that can be made to protect the spine and joints from impact or weight-bearing. For anyone who is post-op, please check with your doctor and let us know if there are any exercise restrictions.

The studio is a dream come true -- I'm so pleased and honored to share the space with you!
