We received Todd’s culture results back and it’s not what we hoped for, but at least we know what we are fighting. Todd’s infection consists of multiple drug resistant bacteria, including MRSP (the dog version of MRSA). This is a highly contagious and difficult to treat infection given that most antibiotics (including the ones he has been on) are not effective in fighting. With what Todd’s bills are already at and the continued mounting costs of his care, we have made a go fund me specifically for the long medical journey he bas ahead of him. Please help support Todd so he can continue to heal 🙏🏼

We made the devastating decision to euthanize Onion this morning. We discovered him at 6:30am having a grand mal seizure and it was clear it had been going on for some time. He seized continuously from 6:30 until 7:20, even after being given emergency medications, so the kindest thing we could do was humanely euthanize. Not everyone will agree with our decision to euthanize and I understand. Having worked in emergency vet med for so many years, understanding the damage that would’ve been done to his brain by that seizure, the decision was clear to me.

We do not know the cause of the seizure and we never will, but I’m glad it happened in our home while under our care rather than with a newly adoptive family.

Beyond the brain damage Onion would face for life, the financial strain a case like this would put on our rescue was not feasible. Onion would’ve needed extensive diagnostics and lifelong care and I never would’ve been comfortable adopting him out. So he would’ve become a resident dog with high medical and financial needs. Our rescues rely on your support, donations help make a case like this do-able, not just for us but for all rescues. While our decision today was mostly medical, I would be lying if I said finances didn’t play a role. Having the money to perform extensive diagnostics would’ve helped us discover the cause of his seizure and make a more informed decision. We are at peace with the decision we made because he is now at peace. Take the time today to make a donation to your favorite rescue in Onion’s name. That way the next dog in crisis can get the care they need.

Onion was barely 4 months old. We rescued him, his mama, and his two sisters from the Kona Low floods. We are grateful his sisters both found loving homes and that he was safe in our loving home for the short life he had.

We love you little Onion. Your life was short but it was full ❤️ keep kissing cameras sweet angel baby

Todd is fighting a severe antibiotic resistant infection following his neuter on 5/6. There have been several complications along the way that ultimately landed us at VERC for continued care. So far the infection has been unresponsive to clavamox and baytril, we have just started a third antibiotic while we wait for culture results to come back. He’s had an ultrasound, culture, and will be needing bloodwork very soon once we have the funds.

There are discrepancies between surgical notes and what I was told at his discharge and I’ve been unable to speak directly with the operating vet so far to confirm details. What we know is that blood supply was severed to one, potentially two testicles during his neuter as they couldn’t locate the physical testicles. An antibiotic resistant bacteria has been introduced to his surgical incisions (most commonly occurs from surgical contamination but chewing at the incisions can also play a factor although he was monitored like a hawk in home to ensure no chewing or licking occurred) resulting in a severe infection. The standard antibiotics prescribed post op were insufficient in fighting the infection, the additional antibiotic prescribed after dehiscence has also been ineffective. No testicles were seen on ultrasound. The current treatment plan is daily changes of the tie over bandage on his preputial wound until the tissue is healthy enough to close. The scrotal wound is being left open as it isn’t as deep as the preputial and there simply isn’t enough tissue to attempt a successful closure.

Todd struggles to keep food and water down but he is otherwise in good spirits. He is able to keep his much needed medications down so we can at least manage his pain levels. He’s a spunky little fighter and this is a very treatable situation, it will just be a long, expensive road to recovery ❤️‍🩹

We’re asking for donations towards his care, even with our 501 discount and vets working with us to keep costs down, it’s still a significant financial strain but we want Todd to continue receiving the best care possible. A couple invoices not included.

Want to foster for only 14 days? Now’s your chance!

We have flood dogs in need of a clean, dry place to crash while they heal from their spay and neuter procedures. All dogs will go home to their farms on the 23rd. All dogs are also small and up to date on vaccines and preventatives! Food and supplies will be provided.

🐾 Sam - 1 year old male, 7lbs, shy, good with dogs. Sam would enjoy a calm house where he could curl up and move at his own pace. He would prefer to have one of brothers around to help him feel more confident but he is brave enough to go it alone if he has to

🐾 Tia - 1 year old male, 7lbs, shy, good with dogs. Sam would enjoy a calm house where he could curl up and move at his own pace. He would prefer to have one of brothers around to help him feel more confident but he is brave enough to go it alone if he has to

🐾 Noname - 5-6 year old male, 10lbs, a little dominant with dogs but would do well with a submissive dog. Noname would like a house with no small children where he could lay on the couch, relax, and watch tv

🐾 Noi - 5-6 year old male, 7lbs, skittish with people but okay with dogs. Noi would feel more confident with his brother Noname by his side but he would also benefit from being separated from him. He would appreciate a house with no small children so he could warm up at his own pace

🐾 Den - 1 year old male, 7lbs, shy, good with dogs. Den would appreciate someone who would let him warm up at his own pace. He REALLY enjoys affection but is still a little unsure of people. He would prefer to have one of brothers around to help him feel more confident but he is brave enough to go it alone if he has to

These 5 boys are on the shy side. They would really like a quiet environment to settle into slowly. Receiving physical affection is all very new to them so they have some mixed feelings about it. If you have experience with scared or shy dogs these are the ones for you! We ask that applicants have no small children in the home for these guys as the chaos would likely scare them. While they heal they need to go outside on leash so they don’t run around and jump too much and incisions need to be monitored for signs of infection.

🐾 QV - approximately 4 year old female, 20lbs, loves people (even kids!), warms up slowly to dogs. QV would love to cuddle on someone’s couch and get lots of treats for her healing period

🐾 Choco - 3-5 year old male, 15lbs, loves people (even kids!) but loves his brother Boy even more so he would appreciate being fostered with him. Great with dogs! Choco would love a couch to crash on with his brother

🐾 Boy - approximately 6 year old male, 18-20lbs, loves people (even kids!) and does great with other dogs. He would be fine fostered on his own but his brother Choco needs him for support! Boy would love a couch to crash on with his brother

These three are very social, crate trained, and adore attention so homes with kids and other dogs are perfect! While they heal they need to go outside on leash so they don’t run around and jump too much and incisions need to monitored for signs of infection. No medications for any of them so they will be easy peasy pups!

Please fill out a temporary foster form if interested!

14 Day Fosters Needed for Small Dogs

We have a closed event this weekend organized by the amazing and Mission Aloha Foundation for flood victims and will be needing more temporary fosters for dogs while they recover from their spays and neuters. This will be a fixed time frame (10-14 days) in which we need people to foster dogs until they are healed enough to return to their owners.

Ideally dogs will go in pairs for comfort. Many are small (under 20lbs) and moderately socialized. Some are fairly skittish so they just need a quiet place to hunker down while others want to hang out on the couch with you. They will need to have their activity restricted and be kept clean and dry during their healing process. Incisions need to be monitored daily for signs of infection.

If you’ve always wanted to help out but cannot commit to long term fostering this is the perfect opportunity for you! We will provide dog food, bowls, puppy pads etc during the foster period and crates if available and I can be reached by phone for any questions.

Submit a temporary foster application via the link. I know each of the animals personally so I’ll try to match you with the best fit for your household. There are currently 16 dogs in need of fostering so all we need are 8 people able to commit to 2 weeks 🎉

The foster period will be from Saturday 5/9 to Saturday 5/23.

Thank you 🐾❤️

✨KARMA-HILA UPDATE✨

PELVIS: healing marvelously albeit it’s a slow process, today’s rads show significant improvement but we still have a long road ahead.

HEAD: good news first — no skull fractures or dislocations! Bad news is this means it is nerve damage from the initial car impact and may or may not heal. There is no treatment at this point, just supportive care. She is able to move her eye and jaw so the damage isn’t too extensive but has caused significant muscle wasting. It’s a cosmetic issue at this point so we are happy to hear this news! She might just be a little ✨wabi sabi✨ for a while, it makes her look very sad but she’s such a sweet happy girl.

If you would like to donate to Karma’s care or the care of any of our other rescues please check out our linktree! Today’s visit was $611 and we will continue with recheck visits and rads (usually in the $400 range — we refilled her medications and preventatives today so a little extra) as needed until she is fully healed.
