What a weekend showing both days at the GDCTA Spring Fling show. Lee Ann and Signed in Ink showed Training Level Test 1 scoring a 59.423% taking second and Training Level Test 2 scoring a 65.0% taking first. Ink still has a hard time focusing while in the dressage ring and there was a lot to look at and hear this weekend, like the Harley that pulled in and parked right behind the judge's stand during test 1, but he pulled it together for the second test and showed so much more focus.

Lacey and Miss Cormina competed Beginner Novice scoring a 27.941% in dressage and adding 5.2 time penalties to their score to finish in second. Way to go girls!

Brylee & Phantom of the Opera showed Training Level Test 1 scoring a 60.385% taking 5th and Training Level Test 2 scoring a 60.345% taking 4th. So proud of her because she remembered and rode both tests with confidence. They also played over an 18" schooling round and jumped double clear.

Mary Catherine & Athena competed Starter scoring a 39.333% and finishing on their dressage score in 3rd. They also showed Training Level Test 1 scoring a 57.692% bringing home 6th. It is a fine line you ride when riding a mare, knowing when to push them and when to take what you get because otherwise it will go south quickly. Mary Catherine stayed on the side of caution Sunday but I believe she will be more assertive the next show and we will see a change in her scores.

Jenna & Donnerdream competed both days and by the second day you could tell Dream was not happy about being in a stall for so long and turned herself into a bit of a dragon, not listening to the well ridden half halts. On day one they showed Training Level Test 2 scoring 64.655% taking 3rd, and Training Level Test 3 scoring 60.8% taking 5th. On day two they showed Training Level Test 1 scoring 62.115% taking 3rd, Training Level Test 2 scoring 60.517% taking 3rd, and Training Level Test 3 scoring 53.20% taking 4th. Good riding Jenna and the new saddle, stirrup leathers, and stirrups are beautiful. It took great courage to break them in at the show considering Saturday was only day two of riding in the saddle.

Yesterday Lacey & Cormina competed BN CT at the Bouckaert Farm schooling show and scored a 32.9% but storms prevented them from being able to jump so the show scored them on dressage only. They brought home first place and probably would have rocked the jumping, she was two away from jumping when the show was put on a lightening hold. It was wild when the first storm came in and it never stopped lightening long enough to resume the show. What a nightmare for the organizer having to make the call to cancel the rest of the show but she definitely made the correct call.

Onward to the GDCTA schooling show next weekend.

Long day yesterday but it was worth it. Jenna & Donnerdream killed it on their Training Level Test 1 scoring a 71.34% bringing home the blue and they had some unfocused moments in their Training Level Test 2 but still pull a 64.82% bringing home the blue again.
Brylee & Phantom of the Opera did their first show together and her first show in a year scoring 60.9% on Training Level Test 1 taking 3rd, and got lost a little bit in Training Level Test 2 (I should have better prepared her but now I know her show nerves and know better how to prepare her) but still scored a 58.10% taking 2nd place. They did an 18" jump round together too and took first, their time was exactly the Novice level optimum time of 1:11, go Brylee!
Lee Ann & Signed in Ink showed Training Level Test 1 scoring a 65.0% taking 2nd and had a baby moment in Training Level Test 2 where he exited stage right at A after the stretchy trot but the judge let us continue and continued to score it so it would have been a 60.5% I am so proud of him and his great brain. I took him purely for exposure because I have had him less than two months and the show was our 11th ride together. I am excited to bring him along and he loves to jump so I am back in the eventing world!

We are off to the AYDC schooling show on Saturday. Looking forward to the show, not really looking forward to the very early wake up call. Brylee is riding Phantom of the Opera in their first show together. Jenna is riding her Dreamsicle, and Lee Ann is bring Signed in Ink to their first show together.

Willow. She was a great pony that I rode at my second lesson place when I was 6 - 8 years old. And then I got lucky that two lesson barns later when I walked in to take my first lesson that’s who I got to ride, again.

I am beyond proud of Jenna today. The last show she did in November did not have good results on her mental state. The scores were not what she wanted and she said she was done showing (for a while or maybe permanently). However, she asked for boot camp over the winter and decided to go to the Centerline Schooling Show today. We had the same judge as the November show, same venue, and same two tests, so truly comparing apples to apples as closely as we could. She NAILED IT today. Training Level Test 1 - 69.423% - 1st place, and Training Level Test 2 - 70.690% - 1st place! So much improvement over the winter in her riding and making Dream do her job!

I have to say my Paint Phantom of the Opera and my PMU byproduct Crack the Code (spotted draft x tb cross) held their own at all shows they attended. When Cisco (Phantom of the Opera) was a hunter for a while with another owner he would beat the expensive warm bloods because of his steadiness and consistence. It is not necessarily what you have under you but how it is ridden that matters.

So I have been having a debate recently with what makes a good dressage horse? so this was my friends opinion:
A good dressage horse has balanced conformation, rhythmic and elastic movement, and strong hindquarters for impulsion. It should be trainable, focused, sound, and responsive, with a charismatic presence. Warmbloods are ideal, but other breeds with natural collection can excel with proper training and partnership.
My opinion:
A good dressage horse is any horse, a horse that is ridden is a dressage horse. The degree of movements and levels are the subjective part. Dressage is not always something we can measure, yes we want elastic movements and strength from the hind but I have seen more native breeds do better half pass than some warm bloods, why is that? Because the rider and horse have a connection, you can have the best conformation, breeding and money in the world, doesn’t mean they will win the class.
So even if your out there doing intro or Grand Prix, understand your abilities, understand your horse’s characteristics and never stop trying to progress regardless of the level; train, listen and build a partnership. Every Olympic horse started from the bottom and worked their way up.

Our Story

Optimum Eventing was founded by Lee Ann Gilson, an A graduate from the United States Pony Club, who is the owner, manager, and trainer at In Unison Farm LLC. She is currently competing Crack the Code at Novice. She started and trained Crack the Code as well as many other horses that have been successful in the show world. She is a certified instructor with USEA - Level I - Training. She has also trained and coached many successful riders over the years in the Eventing and Dressage worlds and also dabbles in the Hunter/Jumper world. She offers instruction to riders who are equine owners and desire to develop a deep connection with their mount. A connection that enables them to capture the best possible performance from their equine partner while sensing that they are a part of that body in motion, moving in unison. She provides a customized quiet approach for her students that allows her to promote the most out of the rider. She has high expectations from her riders, yet, the expectations are within reach for each rider. Some of Lee Ann's and her mounts accomplishments are: 2006 - Phantom of the Opera finished 4th out of 40 in Beginner Novice at the USEA Area III Championships 2010 - Crack the Code was GDCTA Champion for Open Training Level (Dressage) 2011 - Crack the Code was GDCTA Reserve Champion for Pro Beginner Novice and Open High Point Champion at the Poplar Place Farm June USEF/USDF Dressage show 2012 - Crack the Code was GDCTA Champion for Pro Beginner Novice and Foxberry Farm Champion for Beginner Novice 2013 - Crack the Code was GDCTA Champion for Pro Novice (schooling shows) 2014 - Crack the Code finished 6th in Beginner Novice with USEA, 2nd in Beginner Novice with USEA Area III, and GDCTA Champion in Beginner Novice at recognized events, Crack the Code earned his Bronze and Silver USEA medals at Beginner Novice
