Swelling under the " belly" of a bird 🐦can be caused by a variety of conditions ranging from tumors, organomegaly, abscesses, and hernias , to name a few.

In female birds♀️🐦, egg binding 🥚must always be considered.
Here, the egg can not be laid normally. It may be related to the mother's ♀️🐦 health, anatomy, and physiology or to factors affecting the egg 🥚itself.

In this case, medical management 💊💉🩺followed by manual manipulation 👋of a mis-shapen egg allowed its passage. She was able to then pass another egg (normal in size and shape). The owner was given advice on housing, diet, and handling to prevent reoccurance.

Early detection🔎 of disease is an essential factor in increasing survivability.

A very special and Happy First Mother's Day was celebrated by this beautiful birdy momma.🦜🤱

Can you tell why we were in awe of this couple? 😲♂️♀️

Did you notice anything peculiar about the mom and dad?

This was a fascinating and exciting find! 🐣🐣

The diet of a laying bird differs from that of a normal bird. Their physiological stages of laying, setting, and rearing have increased nutritional requirements. We were able to provide dietary and housing advice to help support both mommy's and babies' needs.

Lumps and bumps on your pets can be quite intimidating. 😱

Quite often, as these abnormal masses grow in size, they can cause pain🥹, discomfort 😥, compression/ damage of surrounding tissue💢, hamper mobility♿️, and so much more.

In this case, the mass had grown so large and uncomfortable, that the bird started to mutilate the area👿🤬💢.

Emergency surgical intervention✂️ was performed to prevent damage to the many surrounding vital structures such as the jugular veins, trache, crop, etc.

A delicate🪶 technique and intricate knowledge🤓 of anatomical structures allowed for minimization of discomfort and complications post operatively.

Can you guess what the mass was❓️

Do you know what common mistake led to the development of this condition❓️

I'll leave a comment later this week to explain more.

Female guinea pigs can be spayed. 🐹

While this procedure, like any other surgical procedure , carries some risk, there are several benefits. This includes:
- Pregnancy prevention 👶
- Reduced risk of reproductive tract tumors😷
- Prevention of pyometra✂️
- Prevention of cystic ovarian syndrome 🔮
- Calmer demeanor 😌
- Obesity prevention 💃

Ovarian cysts commonly affect female guinea pigs that are 18 months and older. They can affect one or both ovaries. The chances of this condition affecting an unspayed female guineapig is 75-100%! It can result in:
- aggression
- bilateral trunk alopecia (fur liss)

Egg binding in birds is multifactoral. 🔢

This occurs due to factors either affecting the mother 🦜or the egg🥚.

The factors affecting the mother may include, but aren't limited to:
- malnutrition 🥗
- pathology of the reproductive tract♀️
- Skeletal anomalies🦴
- obesity
-age👵
- stress😩
- trauma💢
- light imbalances💡
- housing issues🛖
- behavioral issues 🤩😍

The factors affecting the egg can include, but are not limited to:
- abnormal shape
- abnormal size
- lack of mineralization
- multiple eggs

In this case, the egg was too large to pass on its own. As a result, ovocentesis🥚💉 was performed to drain the egg prior to its removal.

Early detection and intervention by an experienced veterinarian increases survivability. Reoccurance is always possible, so the underlying issues must be addressed and corrected.

The crop is a thin walled, muscular outpouching of the esophagus. It's function is to store food that is consumed quickly and release it over a defined period of time into the lower parts of the digestive tract for breakdown and digestion.

If the rate at which the crop is emptied is longer than usual or it cannot be emptied naturally at all, it's called crop stasis and can be caused many factors. Clinical signs include regurgitation, weightloss, lethargy, hyporexia and a large pendulous crop.

A crop flush can be both therapeutic and diagnostic. The flush loosens and releases obstructive particles. Based on the results of the flush, targeted antimicrobial therapy can be determined.

Always check your bunny's ears🐇👂

The ears in bunnies 🐇are very important structures.

These sensitive sensory organs allow the bunny to
- detect predators far away⚠️
- help in thermoregulation 🌡
- communicate behaviors🗣

"Itchy" ears can indicate irritation in the ear. This can be caused by many different causes both infectious and non infectious.

In this case, both ears were heavily crusted.

🔬Microscopic evaluation revealed mites called- Psoroptes cuniculi. 🐞

Treatment was initiated, and environmental changes were recommended.

Have you seen similar crusts in your bunny's ears?
