A lot of people ask how I start training with a dog. Generally, I utilize the food they already eat on a daily basis to start shaping the behaviors I want from them, such as sit.
From there, once I realize the dog is starting to understand the behavior I’m asking for, I then begin to name the behavior. After enough repetition and the dog clearly understands what’s being asked, I move into generalization.
Generalization simply means practicing the behavior in different environments and different situations outside of the original training area, so the dog learns to respond reliably wherever you may need it.
