Considering we’ve only had five handling classes so far, I couldn’t be prouder. 🥹

I guess we truly had no idea what an incredible bitch we were hiding at home all this time! 😍

Scout has been to 112 rodeos.

Nell counted.

He started counting at rodeo number 40
when he realized this dog
had been to more arenas than most competitors.

Scout rides in the passenger seat.
Has since he was eight weeks old.
He has slept in more truck cabs
than motel rooms.
He has eaten arena parking lot dinners
and pre-dawn gas station drives
and every quiet in-between.

He is fourteen years old.

The vet said in January: not many more.
His hips. His eyes getting cloudy.
The particular slowing that has no fix.

Nell entered tonight's event knowing.

He carried Scout from the truck.
Set him down gentle near the arena rail.

Scout's tail moved when the crowd got loud.
Same as always.

Nell knelt beside him.

Watched the arena together
the way they have watched
107 arenas before this one.

He said: "Last one, buddy.
You made it to 112."

Scout's ear turned toward him.

Then turned back to the arena.

Still watching.
Still interested.
Still the same dog
who looked at his first arena
at eight weeks old
with those same wide eyes
and never stopped looking.

Nell put his hand on that gray muzzle.

The crowd roared for something in the arena.

Scout's tail moved again.

That was enough. 🐕🤠
