It’s not All Black & White: The Hidden Bias in Dog Breeding

𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬.
A lot can be lost when appearance becomes the goal - working ability, structure, sound temperament, health.

𝘈 𝘣𝘦𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘤𝘰𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘸𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯.

But there’s another side to this story. One we speak of far less.

As awareness around the pitfalls of colour breeding grows, so too does a quiet kind of prejudice - 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬.

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐚 𝐝𝐨𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫.
To assume that a 𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘸𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘵.
That 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘭𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯’𝘵 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘥.
That 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵.

But here’s the truth: 𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐝𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐬.

When we overlook a dog because of how they look, we are doing exactly what we condemn.
We stop seeing 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐚𝐥.
𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩 𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬.

𝘋𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭?
𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘭𝘺?
𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘨𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵?

If those answers are yes - 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫?

We must hold two truths at once: 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬... 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐠𝐮𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝.
Because excellence isn’t found in one shade.
𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦.

Look closer. Look deeper.
Don’t let your eyes make decisions your heart and mind should be responsible for.

Vicky, at almost 15 years, still competes every time, but today she had some trouble with speedy sheep (never the fact that she is now completely deaf lol) Had the best time ever, naturally. 🥰

Onto more sheep, and more trials in the future 🫶

I’ve always wished for the dogs I’ve bred to show their colours in sheep herding, and lately, I’ve been so lucky to watch them pursue this passion. Seeing them carry the drive and passion for sheep that Vicky still has to this day brings a big smile to my face. 😊❤️

🤎 Yumbi (Vicky x Fly) debuted in the Beginner class this past weekend, placing 3rd 🥉 in two runs.

💙 Ponyo (Tuvalu x Reef) placed 3rd 🥉 in Novice on the first day and won 1st 🥇 on the second day with a run so beautiful, it was hard to beat.
