It's World Wildlife Day! These days, the most hunting and scavenging our dogs do probably involves the trash bins in our homes and some fun snuffle mats. But let's take a look at the cool history of how dogs came to be:

Dogs are a domesticated subspecies of grey wolves, which were the world's most widely distributed mammal at one point.

Though the timeline and details of the process are still debated, we can look at somewhere between 14,000 and 29,000 years ago where the first domestication of wolves occured according to studies. It is also believed that humans and grey wolves started developing a mutually beneficial relationship between 20,000 to 40,000 years ago.

The first dogs that were bred were believed to be for hunting, herding and towing dogs. Subsequently, different groups of working dogs were bred based on the evolving needs and lifestyles of humans.

It’s been a week since we settled into our new home at Guillemard and we’re just looking back at the day we opened our doors to all of our dogs and pawrents for a preview of our new space. Oh boy what a (wet) week! It’s been day after day of rain with the monsoon season upon us but that doesn’t get our dogs down! Lots of fun to be had when you’re with friends 😁👯‍♂️👯🐶

Being a doggy daycare operator and having the huge responsibility of taking care of your precious doggies is not something that we take lightly. We’re always thinking of how we can value-add your dogs’ time with us here and that means we’re constantly educating ourselves on how to care and advocate for your dogs better.  
 
We had the pleasure of having canine physiotherapists Ralph, Jo and Chloe from join us for an afternoon to share more about what they do, and how we can improve the quality of life of our furry companions through simple things like properly carrying a dog, and easy massage techniques, to name a few.

We had the pleasure of inviting our pal, Shirley from shutterbarkstudio to join us on this adventure and we’re glad we did because just look at how amazing the photos turned out! Of course, none of this would’ve been possible without our fabulous pawdels and they were all paid in treats after 🤪

Our pups really brought it for TAR's Prom Night 2024! They arrived all decked out in their smartest outfits and took centre stage like they owned it 🥳😎 We took this time to celebrate what a great year we've had and our dogs - those who've been with us the whole time and the new ones who've joined us this year. Thank you for your continuous support! 😇

There was no shortage of splish splash fun at the pool today! We’re so proud of our dogs - some of whom were first-time swimmers. A life jacket jet pack, some words of encouragement and a few balls in the water was all it took to get the swimming started! 🏊‍♀️ 🐶

Today's a special day - we commemorate World Mental Health Day and we recognise that it should be an open conversation every day. Let's take a dive into how mental conditions affect our dogs too. There are 2 most common forms of mental health conditions in canines and they are:

1. Depression: While health experts can't be certain that dogs experience depression the same way humans do, there are a few situations in clinical practice in which it tends to be the only explanation. Symptoms of depression include a sudden change in behaviour, decreased appetite, and lethargic behaviour just to name a few. Ruling out any underlying medical issues is always the first step. Some common triggers for this can be chronic pain, environmental changes, trauma, grief or social isolation. According to AKC, treatment plans often involve support from the owner and can be as simple as taking them on extra fun and long walks, play time and just overall extra attention. In more serious cases, medication may be introduced.

2. Anxiety: As an umbrella term, anxiety is usually subcategorised into Fear, Separation, Age-related. Common symptoms include drooling, excessive panting, pacing around, destructive behaviour, defecation, compulsive behaviours and more. The first thing you should do if you suspect your dog suffers from anxiety is to speak to a professional (medical and training) to identify the type of anxiety your dog is suffering from. From this, you would have a clearer treatment plan that may involve training, counter-conditioning and/or medication.

We’re not a regular doggy daycare, we’re a cool doggy daycare 😎

We get referred to as “doggy school” a lot because much like human schools, your pups learn new desirable habits from humans and other dogs and it’s where they meet and play with friends, they just don’t get homework (lucky dogs!). It may be October 3rd, but very much unlike mean girls, your dogs will be loved and accepted as they are here at “school”!
