At Beecroft Animal Specialist & Emergency Hospital, our Exotic Animal team regularly manages dental conditions in rabbits — and prevention plays a key role in lifelong wellbeing.

🦷 How to support healthy rabbit teeth:

🌾 Hay-based diet
Unlimited, good-quality hay is essential. It promotes natural tooth wear and supports gut health.

🩺 Regular veterinary check-ups
Routine dental assessments allow early detection of overgrowth, spurs, and alignment issues before they become painful.

🧸 Appropriate chew toys
Rabbit-safe wooden toys encourage natural chewing behaviours and help prevent dental overgrowth.

🥬 Fibrous vegetables
Leafy greens and fibrous vegetables contribute to healthy chewing and dietary balance.

✨ Early care prevents long-term dental disease
Dental issues are one of the most common conditions seen in rabbits — but with the right husbandry and veterinary support, many are preventable.

If you have concerns about your rabbit’s eating habits, drooling, or facial swelling, seek veterinary advice early. Our Exotic Animal team is here to help.

HANDLING FRACTURES IN BIRDS
Beecroft Animal Specialists & Emergency Hospital

Birds are delicate, lightweight animals with hollow bones designed for flight. Unfortunately, this unique anatomy also makes them especially vulnerable to fractures, often from everyday household or environmental accidents.

Common Causes of Fractures in Birds

Bird fractures can occur suddenly and unexpectedly due to:

Flying into windows, mirrors, or ceiling fans

Accidental trauma (being stepped on, falls, doors closing)

Animal attacks (cats, dogs, or other birds)

Wing clipping accidents, leading to loss of balance or uncontrolled falls

Signs Your Bird May Have a Fracture

Seek urgent veterinary attention if your bird shows any of the following:

Holding a wing or leg at an abnormal angle

Inability or reluctance to fly or perch

Limping or dragging a wing or leg

Swelling or visible deformity

Pain response when touched or handled

Bleeding, especially if bone protrudes through the skin (open fracture)

Why Immediate Care Matters

Delaying treatment can lead to worsening pain, permanent damage, or complications that affect your bird’s quality of life. Early intervention greatly improves recovery outcomes and helps your bird return to normal movement and behaviour.

📞 If you notice any of these signs, contact us immediately.
If injuries worsen or persist, do not hesitate to call our hotline 6996 1812 for professional avian emergency care.

At Beecroft, our experienced veterinary team is dedicated to safeguarding your bird’s health, welfare, and long-term wellbeing.

15/12/2025

GI Stasis (Gastrointestinal Stasis) is a life-threatening condition where a rabbit’s digestive system slows down or completely stops moving. When the gut stops functioning, food and gas build up, causing severe pain, dehydration, bacterial imbalance, and in advanced cases — gut shutdown.

Rabbits are designed to eat constantly. Their digestive system needs continuous fibre (hay) to keep moving. When that movement slows for any reason, the entire GI tract begins to fail

GI Stasis is one of the most dangerous emergencies in rabbits — and it can become life-threatening within hours. Early recognition saves lives.

Watch for these symptoms:
⚠️ Sudden loss of appetite
⚠️ Little to no p**p
⚠️ Lethargy or hiding
⚠️ Hunched posture
⚠️ Painful tooth grinding
⚠️ Bloated or firm tummy
⚠️ Sudden change in behaviour

If your rabbit shows any of these signs, do not wait overnight. GI Stasis is a medical emergency.
Rabbits require immediate veterinary attention — pain relief, fluids, gut motility support, and close monitoring.

📞 Contact Beecroft Animal Specialists & Emergency Hospital right away
Our 24/7 Emergency & Critical Care team is equipped to stabilise and treat GI Stasis fast — giving your rabbit the best chance of recovery.

Talking to your rabbit isn’t exactly like chatting with a dog or cat… but they do pick up on your voice, tone, and body language. 🐇💬
Rabbits are sensitive, intelligent companions — and the way you speak to them can shape trust, confidence, and deeper bonding.

Here’s how to communicate in a way your bunny understands:

✨ Use a calm, gentle tone
Rabbits feel safer when your voice is soft and predictable. A soothing tone helps reduce stress and builds trust over time.

✨ Be consistent with words
Use the same word during routines — like “come”, “treat”, or “up”. With repetition, rabbits learn to associate these cues with specific actions.

✨ Pair words with actions
Say it as you do it. For example:
➡️ “Treat?” when offering a healthy snack
➡️ “Come” as you gently guide them
This reinforces learning and strengthens communication.

✨ Talk during bonding time
Speak to your rabbit during grooming, feeding, and cuddle sessions. Your voice becomes familiar… and comforting. 🩷

Building a relationship with your rabbit starts with simple, everyday moments — and yes, your voice truly matters.
