Little Mocha coming in for his very first vaccination! Fun fact: Did you know that puppies and kittens should ideally receive their first vaccination at 8 weeks of age, followed by booster shots at 12 and 16 weeks? This schedule helps account for maternal antibodies passed from the mother, which can interfere with how effectively the vaccine works. While these antibodies offer early protection against infections, they can also prevent the puppy’s or kitten’s immune system from properly responding to the vaccine. These maternal antibodies typically wane around 14 to 16 weeks of age. For this reason, if the third booster is given before 16 weeks, a fourth booster may be needed to ensure full immunity.
