ZH and I spent 10 days in bhutan few weeks ago. Life was simple because the country was simple with little distractions and we had the luxury of a guide, driver and full-board accommodation. We walked, ate, slept and spent a lot of time outdoors. I felt my mind clearing up and my eyes were bright. My breathing slowed down.
Singapore is quite different from bhutan. We are not guided by a common religion or monarch. Most people live in apartments with little contact with nature. Most of us don’t grow or forage our own food. We have many financially wealthy people and the median income is much higher than bhutan. We value manicured gardens and parks and we are ok to develop into forests. We destroy mangroves with land reclamation. We think “Ulu” is bad. We kill certain animals and insects because they are “pests”. Our cats can only be indoors and our dogs have little free will.
What I’m trying to say is in our pursuit of the Singaporean dream, it is alright to slow down and think. Do we agree with big corporations buying up small companies? Do we agree with spending most of our revenue on rental? Is there a better way of doing things? Are we supporting small businesses enough? Do we have to drive so aggressively?
