Mothering and 麻煩 (ma fan)

I was telling ZH ma fan may be the most often used phrase in the Chinese language. Parents telling their kids not to create ma fan. Ma fan is also a common reason given when asked why not to do something. Meaning of 麻煩 is similar to inconvenience. There is a similar term in Japanese too— 面倒臭い (mendōkusai)

Growing up, my mother told us not to be ma fan. However, she was the one who got us animals, organised overseas trips/outings and gave birth to us. Birthing us and having us as dependants were ultimate ma fan.

My mom took on more ma fan projects from us in the last few years, such as housing 2 paraplegic cats, overseeing renovation work at fur folks home, housing a rabbit because I asked for help and making us stilt pants. I think she realised she couldn’t avoid ma fan from us and decided to just embrace it.

This is a strange mother’s day post but what I want to say is we should all be more like mothers. Mothers confront ma fan by solving them. Life is made up of clusters of ma fan. You can avoid ma fan and live quietly in isolation or take on ma fan as it arrives and make new friends along the way.

The other day a client told us she felt guilty for letting her cat go. She already did her best and we all agreed it was time. Yet, when someone had to make an important decision like this, they couldn’t help but think of the what-ifs.

Most vets deal with a lot of guilt. Maybe it’s because our patients can’t talk. Maybe it’s because animals have shorter lifespan. Maybe it’s because we see death so often it becomes a part of us.

When I was a new graduate, I couldn’t stop ruminating after each long shift that ended after midnight. Could I have done it differently or could I have done it better?

I believe that the number of things that you feel guilty about increases over time as you live your life. Dwelling in guilt could be self-enforced hell. Perhaps we could transform our guilt to practical use. I encouraged this particular client to support other community cats within her capacity😬

There are many individuals doing rescue work on their own— cats, dogs, rabbits and more. I used to think that they’re fanatics, people who have gone over the edge. However, after doing shelter work for a few years and also working with some of these animal rescue people, I realised that the problem isn’t them.

Trap, neuter, release programmes have been ongoing for decades and they’re largely effective at reducing the stray animal population. Yet, animals still get thrown out and we’ve to find homes or shelter space for them. Individuals doing animal rescue work will end up taking in those that couldn’t be taken into homes or shelters. Also, as Singapore gets more crowded, we are less tolerant of community animals and those that could survive outside have to be taken off the streets too.

Most of these animal rescue individuals do not have social media accounts and they do not fundraise. If you would like to help, please consider adopting animals from them or not buying animals from pet shops and strange sources. Many backyard breeders may also be contributing to this relentless cycle of abandoned/unwanted animals.

I acknowledge that everyone keeps animals for different reasons and adoption isn’t for everyone. Nonetheless, I hope this awareness would help you make more informed decisions 🧡

It is almost the end of 2025—8 years of VetMobile and 1 year of fur folks home.

Changes to vet industry worldwide

-big corporates (Mars etc) buying up small practices
-readily available information online, from surgery videos to scientific articles etc.
-many false information out there with AI generated or deep fake videos
-price increment due to higher overheads—rental, materials etc.
-more noticeable effects of politics on vet industry. For instance, vaccine supply chain was affected by US government shutdown.
-more referral options. In Singapore, we have more specialists than before!
-bigger rich poor gap: there are people who are unable to afford vet care!
-AI is unable to take over cleaning, empathy, skill-based procedures
-farming practices may change with big meat moving towards lab grown meat so as to move with the times. (lab grown meat is not entirely cruelty free!)
-more awareness for zoonotic diseases
-antibiotic and antifungal resistance contributed by overuse in many industries (farming, human and vet medicine etc)
It is more important than ever for our community to move our industry the way we want it to.
It is important not to forget the people who are struggling.
It is crucial to support the valuable small businesses—you don’t always have to get the best deal!
We are grateful that fur folks home survived a year! Phew! 😮‍💨

ZH and I spent 10 days in bhutan few weeks ago. Life was simple because the country was simple with little distractions and we had the luxury of a guide, driver and full-board accommodation. We walked, ate, slept and spent a lot of time outdoors. I felt my mind clearing up and my eyes were bright. My breathing slowed down.
Singapore is quite different from bhutan. We are not guided by a common religion or monarch. Most people live in apartments with little contact with nature. Most of us don’t grow or forage our own food. We have many financially wealthy people and the median income is much higher than bhutan. We value manicured gardens and parks and we are ok to develop into forests. We destroy mangroves with land reclamation. We think “Ulu” is bad. We kill certain animals and insects because they are “pests”. Our cats can only be indoors and our dogs have little free will.
What I’m trying to say is in our pursuit of the Singaporean dream, it is alright to slow down and think. Do we agree with big corporations buying up small companies? Do we agree with spending most of our revenue on rental? Is there a better way of doing things? Are we supporting small businesses enough? Do we have to drive so aggressively?

8 years of VetMobile!
VetMobile is older than our marriage and we started it while living at my parents’ home. People often think VetMobile is larger than it really is—many times I’ve to refer to myself in third person on WhatsApp or phone calls.
The other day we had an impromptu gathering with a few friends and teammates to celebrate VetMobile’s 8 anniversary. Ingrid decorated the place while friends contributed cakes and fruits. We ordered too much cheese and sliders and had them for many days after.
Vetmobile has .folks.home and a team of people now. Many asked how do we run both at the same time. We’ve more responsibilities and worries but also more people to share them with. We are also learning how to accept help.

We are growing with the business, not in scale but in knowledge, skills, work environment and the way we do things. This past year has been tough for many. Anxiety level has gone up with ongoing wars, higher standards of living and the more apparent discrimination and division worldwide. Personally, I struggle everyday.

Vetmobile will continue to provide non-discriminatory services to all till there is no need for us to exist.

Zheng Hao and I started vetmobile with 10 thousand dollars in our business account. We did not approach any business people for their insights because I didn’t want to be told that it was a silly idea or be told to do more business things that would take away the joy of running vetmobile. VetMobile will be 8 in April and through VetMobile we’ve met so many friends!

The first business consultation we did was with Audrey .eco , a sustainability consultant. She acknowledged our concerns and gave us practical advice to work on. Fur folks home started with support from friends, family and community. I’m always grateful for the people that decided to join or assist us despite our lack of social skills.

We met someone with more business experience today and he attempted to guide us. It didn’t end well because I got emotional and triggered. I blamed myself for being weak but ZH thinks he was awful. I’ve met people like this when I applied for scholarships or when my mom attempted to introduce me to her more “successful” friends. They always left me feeling diffident, weak and poor. I decided business and “success” wasn’t for me but ended up with VetMobile and Fur folks home.

I would like to put this down to remind ourselves what VetMobile and FFH are about. We are here because of the community. We are here because there are niches for us to fulfil. ZH and I are hopeless at being business people 🙈🙈

Photos of our team of volunteers and staff for their last harvesting event 🌱folks.home is an amalgamation of the various places we visited and liked, the ideas we have and the inputs of people we’ve spoken to. It is a cluster of beautiful things, disorganised and still unruly. We are learning its ways and moving with the flow. We know .folks.home will be bigger than us and eventually it will be able to function without us. That’s the power of community 🐌

We’ll roll, tumble and ultimately learn to surf 🌊

Our very kind-hearted client-turned-friend and her husband visited .folks.home so Dusty could get a complimentary photoshoot session.
We are fostering Dusty as a team .folks.home till she finds her forever home. Dusty has been for 2 years. She had both her ear canals and external ears removed because of cystadenomatosis, pigmented cysts that constantly ruptured and led to infection.
Dusty is affectionate and hardworking (she gave herself jobs .folks.home ). She eats very well and gives no trouble. We would love to keep her but if she stays, we won’t be able to foster another.
If you can promise to love her forever, please DM us 🧡

Thank you for gracing our new space. It was surreal how so many of you turned up—It was bigger than our wedding!
We had this idea for a while but we left it on hold. Then we opportunely found this space after many failed ones and ZH’s dad (real estate agent) settled the deal promptly.
My mom became the project manager so as to cut renovation cost. My dad did the electrical work and sponsored our cctvs.
Everything took a while but our staff trusted us and stuck with us. We found our staff without ads, just word of mouth and from our pool of friends and client-turned-friends.
Liu yang and Rei of repeatedly worked (and still working) on our wooden doors to ensure that they work well. I think they took a gamble when they agreed on this project. Mdm Koh, mom of a friend and cat feeder of bedok, took on some of our woodwork as well.
So many of you sent us plants when we requested for no flower stands. The plants are thriving and help to block out the morning/afternoon sun.
Ting agreed to dye a huge bunch of antique ramie fabric in Yun nan without hesitation. Despite the rain, she got them ready for us just before the opening! A team of sewing elves came in at short notice ( .chan ) and we’ve our noren!
We had a live pizza making station (forever grateful to Jase and Eunice), coffee, bakes that we bought and you brought, begedil, sound therapy, dabke class by .harry and a whole lot of excitement and controlled chaos. Our team, friends, family, clients and all the animals contributed to this party 🧡
This space reminds me of my grandparents’ old home at Upper Paya Lebar, that is now a flattened piece of land. My grandmother was a businesswoman and she was also good at growing things 🌱
Fur folks home is created in memory of grandma Lau, Terence (Mr Tobi’s guardian), Jiatian and all the beautiful souls we have encountered so far 🧡
Not forgetting my cousin-in-law for taking most of the pictures here 🫶
