🐰 Tiny parasite, big trouble. Coccidia can affect your bunnies' health - but with the vet care, the bunny will bounce back strong ! 💪🏻
We recently brought our new surrendered bunny to TAD AMK for a check-up and found out through a f***l test that he has coccidia. His liver enzyme (ALT) was also slightly higher, which can sometimes happen when bunnies are fighting this parasite.
The bunny has been prescribed antibiotics and will be going back to TAD AMK for review on 24 Sep 2025.
✨ So, what is coccidia?
It’s a microscopic parasite that lives in a rabbit’s intestines (sometimes liver). Many bunnies can carry a small amount without problems, but when it multiplies too much, it can cause illness.
⚠️ How do rabbits get coccidia?
From hay, food, or water contaminated with infected p**p
From grooming themselves after stepping on dirty areas
Young or stressed bunnies are more at risk
💊 Treatment & Care
The vet will prescribe special medication to help clear it, plus supportive care like good hydration and proper diet. Always finish the full course of medicine!
🛡 Prevention Tips
- Keep litter boxes and play areas clean
- Give fresh water and quality hay daily
- Quarantine new rabbits before introducing - them to others
- Reduce stress and overcrowding
With early detection and care, bunnies with coccidia can recover well 💕
👉 If your bunny shows soft/mushy p**p, weight loss, or reduced appetite, it’s always best to bring them to a rabbit savvy vet for a check.
