COVID-19 ADVISORY FOR PETS

Recently, Hong Kong’s announcement that a pet dog tested positive to the COVID-19 virus has caused anxiety among some pet owners. A few have reached out to us and others to ask if they should surrender their pets to protect themselves.

The SPCA has been closely monitoring developments and been keeping up to date with information from health authorities such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), World Health Organisation (WHO) and our local Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS).

This is what we know so far. There is no evidence that dogs or other companion animals can spread the COVID-19 virus. The dog from the case in Hong Kong, if the animal is indeed infected, likely picked up the virus from his or her human companion, and the animal also did not display any signs of the disease. The primary mode of transmission of the virus remains human to human. You are no safer from the virus if you surrender your pet.

Good hygiene practices will go a long way in protecting you, your family and your pets. Wash your hands before and after interacting with your pets. Keep your pets healthy by taking them to the vet for regular health check-ups, ensuring they are up to date with vaccinations and other preventives such as flea/tick control, are on a nutritious diet and that they receive plenty of appropriate social interaction and mental stimulation.

This is a time to come together to look after our loved ones, including our pets, and the larger community. We wish you and your pets the best of health.
