Nugget and Nala decided to sneak a chocolate snack while no one was looking. Unfortunately, they managed to eat some before they were caught. So these two cheeky pups ended up in our ER, where Dr. Claire stepped in with the care they needed. After inducing vomiting, giving fluids, medications, and plenty of cuddles, they’re now feeling much better.
Chocolate might be a sweet treat for us, but it’s toxic for dogs. It contains caffeine and theobromine, which can overstimulate the heart and nervous system. It can also lead to vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and in some cases, pancreatitis.
Chocolate toxicity is an emergency. Even small amounts, especially in smaller dogs, can be dangerous. If your dog eats chocolate:
* Bring them to CVH right away. We’re open 24/7.
* Bring the wrapper or share what kind and how much they ate.
* Don’t wait for symptoms. Chocolate absorbs slowly, and signs may appear later.
Signs of chocolate toxicity include vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, increased thirst or urination, fast breathing or heart rate, tremors, seizures, or even coma.
We’re just thankful Nala and Nugget are safe and recovering well ...even if they’re still not telling us who came up with the plan to eat chocolates.
