Wir, Ute Gerhardt, Pädagogin und Reitlehrerin, und Walter Bofenschen, Stadtplaner, leben seit 1990 in dieser ursprünglichen Gegend an der Südwestküste Portugals, mitten im Naturpark Costa Vicentina. Alle, die in intakter Natur direkt am Meer Erholung suchen oder die traumhafte Dünenlandschaft zu Pferd entdecken wollen, laden wir ein, ihren Urlaub bei uns zu verbringen.

Architectural details here carry a story forward, take the cana wall in the breakfast barn.

Monte Meu and all the old farm houses in the village had ceilinging covered with the abundant cana, long bamboo like reeds, that shape the landscape.

Nowadays, new ceilings are insulated and plastered but we wanted to keep the beauty and tradition alive so we turned the cana vertically to create a striking piece that brings the outside in and the old finds the new.

We had lots of fun harvesting the Cana, scaping them clean and fitting them together like a puzzle.

We are enjoying watching them mellow from green to a warm ochre color.

What we’ve been up to lately (besides playing with shadows and spending time with our horses):

We harvested the grapes and turned them into fresh juice. Succeeded in putting up the handwritten signs by auntie Chill. so happy with the result!
Took dips in the Atlantic for a quick recharge, shared colorful meals fresh from our horta and caught some nice sunsets.

This table has seen so many stories, so much laughter and people who arrive as guests and leave as friends.

There’s something about sitting outside under the Alentejo sky that makes everyone slow down and just be.

It’s our year of the Zinnia.

Colourful joy, easy care, flowered amazingly (and is currently in need of my attention).

Our chickens being funny and distracting us from work. They’ve been quite bored actually lately because we’re letting them out less. They’ve been ruining the garden and we have to put wheels on the coop! So we can move the coop and they can help us spread the horse manure. Another project ignored, which we should tackle coming week. The other day we had a fairy egg, yesterday I had mega egg.

We packed our sun umbrella, snacks, and beach chairs and headed for Praia dos Alteirinhos. Arriving at high tide, there was only a small strip of sand left where people were comfortably sitting together. The little waterfall was used as a backdrop for many photos, or as a freshwater shower after the salty ocean. Dad and kids were building a dam. 18-year-old girls from the US and France were becoming new friends and played volleyball. We ate cherries and watched our fellow people. And, of course, took a beach nap.

One of the many pictures made while she was staying with us not long ago. She worked with Sophie before and thats how she also joined for the Salt&Sumac week. We can’t wait to share more, she’s captured our Monte and us and all the small things in such a beautiful way.

Some of our memories and moments of the past days. Simple things, stunning views, the perfect light. Can’t get over the color of the Gladiola. Grandma’s onions hung to dry, couldn’t resist taking a photo. Chairs O M A R C I T Y . W O R L D that give every place or terrace that little extra. Heleen we’re so happy with the green! We’ve changed the color of our ‘barras’ from blue to green and we love it.
