Healthy calf rearing is crucial for the future productivity of cattle herds, especially in countries like Pakistan where livestock plays a significant role in rural economies. Here are key strategies for healthy calf rearing in Pakistan:

1. Colostrum Management

Give colostrum within 2 hours of birth, ideally within the first hour.

Ensure the calf consumes 10% of its body weight in colostrum within the first 24 hours.

Use clean feeding equipment to avoid infections.
2. Proper Nutrition

After colostrum, feed good-quality milk or milk replacer for the first 2-3 months.

Introduce calf starter feed from day 7 to develop the rumen.

Provide clean, fresh water at all times, especially in hot climates.

3. Hygiene and Housing

Keep the calving area clean and dry to reduce disease risk.

Calves should be kept in well-ventilated, dry, and comfortable housing.

Clean feeding buckets and bedding regularly to avoid bacterial buildup.

4. Vaccination and Disease Control

Follow a vaccination schedule against common diseases (like FMD, HS, BQ).

Deworm calves regularly starting from 3-4 weeks of age.

Monitor for signs of scours and pneumonia, and treat promptly.

5. Navel Care

Dip the calf’s navel in iodine solution right after birth to prevent infections.

6. Identification and Record Keeping

Use ear tags or tattoos to identify calves.

Keep records of birth date, weight, health treatments, and feeding.

7. Weaning Practices

Wean calves at around 8-12 weeks, based on weight and feed intake.

Avoid sudden changes in diet to reduce stress.

8. Farmer Education and Training

Lumpy skin disease (L*D) is a contagious viral disease affecting cattle, characterized by fever, skin nodules, and potentially death, primarily transmitted by blood-feeding insects like flies, mosquitoes, and ticks.
👉Cause:
L*D is caused by the lumpy skin disease virus (L*DV), a member of the Poxviridae family.
👉Host:
Primarily affects cattle and water buffalo.
Transmission:
Spread through blood-feeding insects (flies, mosquitoes, ticks), contaminated equipment, and movement of infected animals.
👉Symptoms:
Fever.
Firm, raised nodules (lumps) on the skin, often around the head, neck, ge****ls, limbs, and other parts of the body.
Swelling of limbs, brisket, and ge****ls.
Watering eyes and increased nasal and salivary secretions.
Decreased milk production.
Abortion in pregnant animals.
In rare cases, death.
👉Geographical Distribution:
L*D is endemic in many African countries and has spread to the Middle East and parts of Europe.
Economic Impact:
L*D can cause significant economic losses due to reduced milk production, decreased animal weight, infertility, and damaged hides.
👉Diagnosis:
Diagnosed through histopathological evidence, virus isolation, or PCR.
👉Control and Prevention:
Vaccination with attenuated virus offers the most promising method of control.
