As autumn arrives here in the UK, in Pakistan it's a time when equine fairs begin popping up around the country.

Equine fairs allow owners and traders to come from far and wide to buy and sell horses, donkeys and mules. Hundreds or even thousands of animals can be found at each fair, and once sold, most go on to work in brick kilns, agriculture or alongside families for transport and subsistence.

With so many people and animals in one place, equine fairs offer Brooke Hospital for Animals teams an opportunity to interact and offer training and advice, as well as providing treatments where necessary.

Every year we as teams engage with fair managers/organisers to help them improve the environment for the equines visiting the fair. Some of the changes introduced by the fair organisers post intervention include:

🔸 proper ramps for loading and unloading
🔸 ensuring availability of green fodder
🔸 provision of clean water to drink

These changes have led to a decline in the number of commonly occurring injuries and health issues seen at equine fairs such as health stress and colic. Equine Rescue Network Equinety Equidia World Veterinary Association PETA
