*What is L*D?*
Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral disease that affects cattle and water buffalo. It’s spread mainly by biting insects like mosquitoes, flies, and ticks. It does _not_ infect humans.

*Key Signs to Watch For:*

- *Skin nodules*: Firm, round lumps 2-5cm across the body, especially on head, neck, udder, and legs
- *Fever*: Up to 41°C for 1-2 weeks
- *Swollen lymph nodes*
- *Reduced milk yield* — can drop by 50% or more
- *Loss of appetite, weakness, drooling*
- *Lameness* if lumps are near joints
- *Abortion and infertility* in severe cases

*Why It Matters:*
L*D doesn’t usually kill adult cattle, but mortality can reach 10%.
The bigger hit is economic: reduced milk, weight loss, damaged hides, trade bans, and treatment costs. An outbreak can shut down your farm’s productivity for months.

*How to Protect Your Herd:*
1. *Vaccinate* 💉 — This is the #1 prevention. Annual vaccination with a live attenuated L*D vaccine is highly effective. Talk to your vet about timing before fly season.
2. *Control insects* 🦟 — Use fly sprays, pour-ons, and manage manure/breeding sites. Quarantine new animals for 28 days.
3. *Biosecurity* — Limit farm visitors. Disinfect vehicles and equipment. Don’t share needles between animals.
4. *Isolate sick animals* — L*D spreads fast. Separate infected cattle immediately and contact your vet/DVO.

*Is there treatment?*
No specific antiviral cure.
Treatment is supportive: anti-inflammatories, antibiotics for secondary infections, wound care, and good nursing. Early detection = better recovery.

*

*Bottom line:* Vaccination + insect control + biosecurity = your best defense.
