Italy has officially set a new European standard for animal welfare with the enactment of the sweeping "Brambilla Law."

The legislation fundamentally redefines the legal status of animals, transitioning them from "property" to "sentient subjects" with inherent rights.

Under these new statutes, anyone convicted of k*lling an animal "with cruelty or without necessity" now faces up to 4 years in prison and fines reaching €60,000 ($65,000).

The law also targets organized cruelty, raising the stakes for animal fighting to 4-year sentences and six-figure fines.
