Colostrum Storage: Preserve Immunity for Healthy Calves

Proper colostrum storage is essential to maintain its immunoglobulin (IgG) content and prevent bacterial contamination. Incorrect storage can reduce immunity and put calves at risk of disease.

Guidelines for Farmers & Veterinarians:

Immediate cooling: Collect colostrum within 2 hours of calving and cool it quickly to 4°C if feeding later the same day.

Short-term storage: Store in the refrigerator (4°C) for up to 24 hours.

Long-term storage: Freeze in small, clean containers (1–2 liters) for up to 6 months.

Thawing: Thaw slowly in warm water (37–40°C). Do not microwave — high heat destroys antibodies.

Hygiene: Always use clean containers, gloves, and utensils to prevent bacterial growth.

Avoid mixing colostrum from sick or antibiotic-treated cows with good colostrum.

✅ Properly stored colostrum = healthy calves = strong herds.

Good Quality Colostrum:
✅ Thick, yellow, and creamy
✅ High in immunoglobulins (IgG)
✅ Collected within 2 hours after calving
✅ Free from mastitis or contamination

Poor Quality Colostrum:
❌ Watery or thin
❌ Low in antibodies
❌ Collected late or from sick cows
❌ May contain pathogens

کولوسٹرم کا معیار براہ راست بچھڑے کی صحت اور مستقبل کی پیداوار پر اثر ڈالتا ہے۔

اچھی کوالٹی کا کولوسٹرم:
✅ گاڑھا، زرد اور کریمی
✅ امیونوگلوبولنز (IgG) کی مقدار زیادہ
✅ پیدائش کے 2 گھنٹے کے اندر نکالا جائے
✅ کسی بیماری یا آلودگی سے پاک

خراب کوالٹی کا کولوسٹرم:
❌ پتلا یا پانی جیسا
❌ اینٹی باڈیز کم
❌ دیر سے نکالا گیا یا بیمار گائے کا
❌ ممکنہ جراثیم رکھتا ہو

Colostrum is packed with immunoglobulins (IgG) that protect the calf from diseases during the first critical weeks of life. Without it, calves are highly susceptible to diarrhea, pneumonia, and other infections.

Guidelines for Farmers & Veterinarians:

Feed high-quality colostrum within 2 hours of birth — the earlier, the better.

Ensure at least 3–4 liters are given in the first feeding.

Test colostrum quality with a colostrometer or Brix refractometer.

Keep colostrum clean: discard milk from sick cows or antibiotic-treated cows.
