Fibroadenomatous hyperplasia of Mammary glands, also known as fibroadenomatous change or fibroadenoma, is a benign Mammary gland tumor that usually affects young intact female cats.
๐ทCharacteristics
๐ธBenign: Non-cancerous growths that don't metastasize.
๐ธHormone-dependent: Tumor growth is influenced by hormonal fluctuations.
๐ธRapid growth: Tumors can grow rapidly, especially during heat cycles.
๐ทClinical Signs
๐ธPalpable masses: One or multiple masses can be felt in the mammary tissues.
๐ธSkin changes: Redness, ulceration, or discharge may occur if the tumor becomes large or infected.
๐ธPain: Cats may exhibit discomfort or pain when the tumor is touched or manipulated.
๐ทDiagnosis
๐ธPhysical examination: A veterinarian will perform a thorough examination to identify the tumor.
๐ธImaging: Radiographs (x-rays), ultrasound, or other imaging modalities may be used to rule out malignancy.
๐ธCytology or biopsy: A sample of cells or tissue may be collected for examination to confirm the diagnosis.
๐ทTreatment
๐ธSurgery: Spaying or ovariohysterectomy is often recommended to reduce hormone levels and prevent tumor growth.
๐ธTumor removal: Surgical excision of the tumor may be performed, especially if it's causing discomfort or ulcerating.
๐ธMonitoring: Regular check-ups with a veterinarian are essential to monitor for any changes or new tumor growth.
๐ทPrognosis
The prognosis for cats with fibroadenomatous hyperplasia is generally good, especially if the tumor is removed and hormone levels are reduced through spaying in females.
