Simon is the only cat in history to ever receive the Dickin Medal - the "Animal Victoria Cross" - for military gallantry. In 1949, this small black and white cat was aboard the British ship HMS Amethyst when it came under heavy fire on China's Yangtze River.

Shrapnel tore through the captain's cabin where Simon slept, wounding him. No one expected him to survive the night. But Simon recovered - and while the ship remained trapped for 101 days, he protected the crew's dwindling food supplies from rats and boosted morale by visiting wounded sailors daily.

He became a worldwide celebrity. Thousands of letters poured in. He was even given the rank of "Able Seacat."

A newborn baby was found abandoned outside a bathroom in a railway workers’ colony in Nadia district in Bengal just before dawn, lying on the cold ground with no blanket or note. But in a scene that residents are calling nothing short of miraculous, a pack of stray dogs had formed a protective circle around the infant, keeping watch through the night without barking or moving away. Locals say the dogs didn’t let anyone near until morning, standing guard as if they understood the baby’s fragile fight for life, reported India Today.

When a resident, Sukla Mondal, softly approached, the dogs stepped aside, allowing her to wrap the newborn in her dupatta and call for help. The baby was rushed to Maheshganj Hospital and later shifted to Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital, where doctors confirmed there were no injuries and that the child had been abandoned soon after birth. Police and Child Help authorities have begun investigations and initiated procedures for the baby’s long-term care.
