Who would dominate in a walking competition — the climbing perch or the walking catfish?

In a battle of land-crawling champions, it’s a close race, but the walking catfish (Clarias batrachus) has the edge. Why? Because it’s built for the hustle. Using its strong, spined pectoral fins and muscular body, it can crawl over dry land for up to 1.2 kilometers, searching for new water sources. It’s even been seen crossing roads and fields after rain.

The climbing perch (Anabas testudineus), while also impressive, uses a side-to-side motion with help from its gill plates and can survive out of water for days — but it’s slower and more deliberate, built more for survival than speed.

So in a straight-up walking showdown?
The walking catfish takes the win — no legs, no problem. 🐟💨

Meet The Clown Knife Fish!

clown knife fish are often marketed incorrectly or misleadingly, especially in pet stores and online shops. This leads many beginner fishkeepers to buy them without realizing their true needs, which can result in poor fish welfare or rehoming.

🛑How Clown Knife Fish Are Marketed Wrongly

1. 🎣 Sold While Very Small
Often sold as cute 2–4 inch juveniles with No warning that they can grow to 2–3 feet (60–90 cm)
People assume they’ll stay small or only need a medium tank

🛑 Reality: They grow fast and outgrow tanks quickly

2. 🐠 Labeled as “Community-Friendly”
Some stores label them as peaceful or community fish but the Truth: They’re predators and will eat any smaller tankmates

❗ They are not safe with guppies, tetras, or even medium-sized fish

3. 🏠 Tank Size Understated
Listings may suggest they’re fine in 50–75 gallon tanks but In reality, adults need 150+ gallons minimum — preferably more

4. 💸 Pitched as “Beginner-Friendly”
Sometimes advertised as hardy or low-maintenance
• Truth: They need very stable water, gentle lighting, and special care
• Also prone to injuring themselves due to poor tank layout

5. 😢 Lack of Long-Term Care Info
Many buyers aren’t told:
• How long they live (10+ years)
• How big they’ll get
• That they’re nocturnal and may be shy during the day

Holy Gentle Cow!

GloFish tetras are typically Black Skirt Tetras (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) that have been genetically modified to express fluorescent proteins.

These glowing genes come from jellyfish or coral and were originally used for scientific research, like detecting water pollution.

✅ Are they natural?
No — their colors are not natural.
But they’re real, living fish, and their offspring inherit the glowing gene.
The color is not painted or injected — it’s built into their DNA.

A gonopodium is a modified a**l fin used by male live-bearing fish for internal fertilization. It functions as a reproductive organ—specifically, an intromittent organ, meaning it is used to deliver s***m into the female.

Found in: Males of certain fish species, especially in the family Poeciliidae (e.g., guppies, mollies, swordtails, and platies).

The retorse hook in the gonopodium of a guppy is a backward-facing hook-like structure located near the tip of the gonopodium. It plays an important role during mating by helping the male guppy secure the gonopodium inside the female's ge***al opening during s***m transfer.

The ventral serrae help grip or stabilize the gonopodium during insertion into the female’s ge***al opening.

Im fascinated.! Men also have hooks😂 which helps during 🤭

Yes, it is true that black mollies (a type of Poecilia species, often Poecilia sphenops) have been recorded giving birth to up to 240 fry in one brood, though it is extremely rare and typically only occurs in large, mature, and very healthy females kept in optimal conditions.

Mollies are larger than many other livebearers, allowing them to carry more developing embryos.

Internal superfetation (continuous development of multiple clutches) may result in massive synchronized drops if conditions signal a good time to release all fry.

Optimal conditions: warm temperature, high-quality food, low stress, and spacious tanks contribute to large broods.

240 fry in one batch from a black molly is possible and has been recorded, but it's an extreme outlier, not a norm. Most mollies give birth to 30–100 fry per cycle.

Holly molly! Ive had less than 100 only😂

Betta fish have a labyrinth organ, which acts like a primitive lung. It allows them to:
Breathe air directly from the surface
Survive in low-oxygen water, unlike most fish

So while other fish rely entirely on dissolved oxygen in water (often provided by air pumps or water movement), bettas come to the surface and gulp air.

Bettas survive in small tanks because they’re built for harsh environments, but it’s not ideal for their health or happiness. Think of it like you living in a closet—you could, but you wouldn’t thrive.

Now i know!😃

Fyi

While it may seem cruel, this behavior has evolutionary advantages and is considered a form of filial cannibalism, which is observed in many fish species.

Natural Selection and Guppy Cannibalism: The Connection

1. Elimination of Weak Offspring
In nature, fry that can’t hide, swim quickly, or recognize danger are more likely to be eaten — only the smartest or fastest survive.
This supports "survival of the fittest", a core principle of natural selection.
Over generations, this can lead to fry that are more evasive, better camouflaged, or develop earlier survival instincts.

2. Resource Management

Guppies are prolific breeders (20–60 fry every 30 days).
If all fry survived, they'd rapidly overcrowd their habitat, leading to starvation or collapse.
Eating some fry helps control population and ensure better resource availability for the survivors.

3. Cannibalism as a Selective Pressure

Fry that survive predation by adults are more likely to carry the genes for successful escape behavior or physical traits that discourage attack (like odd colorations or speed).
Over time, this shapes guppy populations to be more resilient.
