Many internal parasites can affect our pets 🥺. The most common ones are the following:
Roundworms
They are transmitted when dogs ingest eggs from a soiled environment. Puppies can also be contaminated by their mother. In the absence of control, heavy burdens of worms can result in digestive disturbance and even obstruction. Humans can also get the parasite from soiled matters and become sick.
Hookworms live in the dog’s small intestine where they attach. Dogs become infested by ingesting larvae, by larvae penetrating the skin, or through the milk when suckling. The adult worms damage the intestine. They can cause anaemia and diarrhoea.
Whipworms
They can be transmitted by swallowing infective eggs from matters soiled by dog faeces.
They can cause anemia in severe infestations, and they damage the intestine, resulting in diarrhoea.
Flea tapeworms
There are several types of tapeworms, but the most common one observed in dogs is transmitted by fleas, hence its name the ‘flea tapeworm’. High levels of infestation can cause digestive disturbance and growth impairment in puppies.
