Why do people like cats?

Ever since I found myself appreciating and loving cats, I have been wondering what exactly do they have that those who are into them more often than not, have more than 1. So I decided to dig and find out.

To start with, cats share 90% of our DNA. Therefore are very similar to humans in more ways than we thought possible which allows us to “read” and relate to them in how they move and do things. They are like fluffy little humans on four paws.

I overheard my husband said once that cats look like babies because of their cute faces. He was actually on point because their eyes are at the front of their heads, giving them a face that seems more human than many other creatures...they have expressive, beautiful eyes, which further enables us to communicate with them non-verbally.

They adapt to us, using meows to “speak human”, which indicates that they are aware and know our characteristics. Perhaps you’ve noticed adult cats don’t meow at each other, just at us, in an attempt to communicate.

Okay so why are we so attached to cats?

👉🏼 They live much longer than most other pets. On the average cats live to at least 16 years.

👉🏼 They enjoy following a routine, and they will often adjust theirs to that of their humans.

👉🏼 They are individuals. No cat is ever the same as another. This is of course true for every creature in the universe, but in the case of cats, it comes with a set of characteristics that are very easy to integrate into a modern lifestyle.

👉🏼 Lastly they are incredibly beautiful. They are easy to love and they reward us by being dignified, amusing, hedonistic little sociopaths you can’t help but adore. 😹😹😹

Take it from us rescuers...my household has been very interesting and full of laughter because there is never a dull moment with these amazing creatures around.

Now I know why I personally go gaga over cats.

Six years ago, in the midst of uncertainty, my daughter opened her heart to a rescue cat.

We had no idea then how much that one act of love would change everything.

That cat — Pretzel — didn’t just change our lives. She sparked a ripple effect that continues to transform the lives of so many homeless animals.

Today, 290 lives have been touched and uplifted.

🐾 74 once-homeless cats and dogs have found their forever homes
🐾 12 are in safe, loving foster care
🐾 Over 200 more have been spayed/neutered, vaccinated against rabies, and protected through core vaccinations

All this because one rescue became family.

A cat named Pretzel became a symbol of hope, healing, and the power of compassion.

Happy adopt-sary, our precious girl. Your story is still changing the world. 🐾❤️

“Ay akala ko imported, Puspin lang pala. Ang Ganda kasi at ang laki”

“Pusang gala pinapakain mo ng cat food?”

“Kailangan ba pa vet pa ang mga na rescue lang?”

“Sanay yan sa kahit ano lang, sa kalye nga nag survive”

These are just few of the most common statements said directly to me or to other rescuers and people advocating for the rights and welfare of the homeless animals.

Allow me to share a few thoughts on the topic of “breeds,” based on what I’ve gathered from various readings and personal reflection.

To start, it’s important to recognize that cats and dogs have very different histories with humans. Dogs were actively domesticated through human intervention. Long ago, people saw the many ways dogs could help us—herding, guarding, companionship—and began selectively breeding them, which is why we now have such a wide variety of dog breeds.

Cats, however, took a different path. They chose us. When humans transitioned from a nomadic lifestyle to agriculture, our food stores began to attract pests like mice and rats. Cats, being clever and opportunistic, saw an easy hunting ground near human settlements. Over time, we began to see their value—not just as hunters, but as non-threatening creatures that helped protect our food and our health. So we allowed them to stay. But unlike dogs, cats retained control over their own reproduction for a much longer time. That’s why we see such a broad range of appearances and personalities in cats, with far fewer formally recognized “breeds.”

The concept of “breeds” is something humans created. And while some people find joy in the specific traits of certain breeds, we should be mindful not to let these labels lead to discrimination. A life is a life—precious in any form, breed or not.

Personally, I’m not against recognized or expensive breeds. What I am against is the idea that a cat’s value—or the quality of care it deserves—should depend on its price tag. Whether a cat comes from a breeder or a shelter, the commitment to love, feed, and care for them should be the same. All pets, regardless of origin, deserve the best we can give.

I’ve been rescuing animals for 5 years and deeply committed to animal welfare for 4. It’s a journey filled with heartbreak and hope. There are moments of utter exhaustion, self doubt, and wondering if I am doing the right thing.

Rescuing is the most rewarding and the most painful thing I’ve ever done. You see unimaginable cruelty, feel helpless, and carry images burned in your memory. You pick up the pieces of damage you didn’t cause and give everything you have—yet it’s never enough. You try to protect yourself, but the pain always finds a way in.

The cruelty changes you. The injustice breaks you. Your faith is tested daily, your heart wounded, your soul altered. You fall, you get up, and you keep going.

You learn to grieve, to fight harder, to hope more. You learn when to hold on and when to let go. You discover who you are—and why it matters.

And when it gets too much, you look into their eyes. You see the journey, the healing, the trust rebuilt. You remember the difference you made. And in that moment, you know—it was all worth it.

To rescue is to face an intense kind of heartbreaks. But rescuing gives immense joy no words can capture. Rescue is worth it—because the animals are so worthy…

All I want to try to achieve is to make other people aware and understand that underneath their tough, fierce feral exteriors, these remarkably misunderstood cats are capable of extraordinary love and worthy of compassion.

Become advocates for spaying, neutering and most of all... compassion.

Let us turn the global compassion deficit responsible for cat overpopulation into a global compassion surplus by telling their stories, giving them a voice, and helping change the narrative about homeless cats.

had been struggling with recurring UTI issues for a while—despite dietary changes, constant encouragement to drink more water, and all the care we could give. He had to go through several rounds of sedation just to have a catheter placed, and it was heartbreaking each time.

So when our trusted vet, Doc Wilford Almoro , suggested a s*x change surgery as the best way to keep Fifa safe and healthy, I didn’t hesitate. UTI can be life-threatening for male cats, and at the end of the day, all I wanted was for him to live a long, comfortable life.

He healed beautifully. And have you seen the precision of the shaving job? Nurse Ace Caleja really delivered—ibang level ang skills!

Huge thanks to Makati Animal Health Clinic for their continued compassion and excellence in caring for animals—especially those who are often overlooked or dismissed by society. Your work matters so much.

Sharing this for awareness. DMCI Homes DMCI Communities made a decision recently that was truly unkind and unfair. Disregarded the majority who were wanting for a more humane approach for the community cats…but alas…decided to side with the few noisy ones that were against the presence of the community cats. They forgot they were dealing with residents…residents who they are earning from…they failed to be fair and just wanted good PR without having the backbone to follow through and listen to individuals who actually spend money to better the community without additional expense from the side of DMCI. 🤷🏻‍♀️ go figure!
