☝️
As Ball Python hatch season is in full swing, I know we’re all excited to bring a new baby home. Just a quick reminder though, buyer’s due diligence is always important. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
1-Make sure everyone at home is on board.
Even though Ball Pythons are generally calm and easy to keep, they are still snakes. Be sure that all family members are okay with having one around before bringing one home.
2-Get your Ball Pythons from responsible farm permittees.
Choose sellers who clearly prioritize the animals' welfare. Always check if the snake looks healthy and don't hesitate to ask questions. A good seller will be happy to answer.
3-Have an escape-proof room, not just an escape-proof enclosure.
Sometimes we forget to lock the enclosure properly. If that happens, an escape-proof room gives you a much better chance of finding your Ball Python safe and sound.
4-Keep the room dark, quiet, and warm.
Ball Pythons are ectothermic, so they don't do well in cold or air-conditioned spaces. Make sure the room stays within the proper temperature and humidity range to keep your snake healthy and comfortable.
5-Prepare the right enclosure size.
Not too big, not too cramped. They should be able to stretch out comfortably while still feeling secure. A properly sized enclosure helps reduce stress.
6-Have a steady rodent supply.
Make sure you’re feeding the right prey size. A good rule is to match the feeder to the girth of the thickest part of your snake’s body. Avoid overfeeding. Once every 6 to 7 days is a good feeding schedule.
7-Don’t rush the bonding.
I know it’s tempting to handle them right away, but Ball Pythons get overwhelmed easily. Give them time to adjust to their new space first. Also, avoid handling them right after a meal. Let them digest for at least 48 hours before you pick them up again.
ENJOY! 😊
