SUMS UP MY PAHA 2026 EXPERIENCE.

Grateful for the opportunity to learn from nternational experts across different fields of veterinary medicine, from internal medicine, emergency and critical care, hematology, clinical pathology, diagnostic imaging, dermatology, cardiology, surgery, pain management, and more.

I also appreciated that this year’s conference went beyond clinical medicine, with dedicated discussions on veterinary wellness, psychology, mental health, leadership, and practice management. Even better, vet techs, nurses, and aides were given their own learning opportunities, an important step toward advancing the entire veterinary healthcare team.

And of course, always good to reconnect with fellow vets, mentors, colleagues, and friends.

Thank you to The Cat Clinic for giving me this opportunity to continuously learn and grow, and to Avli Biocare AVLI Biocare, Inc. for the generous sponsorship. 🙏🏻

Veterinary medicine never stops evolving, and neither should we. Looking forward to PAHA 2027 and to more advancement in veterinary medicine in the Philippines! 🇵🇭🩺

I’d like to share one of the harder moments of being a veterinarian.

This is Felicia, one of my patients who battled FISS (Feline Injection-Site Sarcoma), a rare but aggressive cancer that can develop at an injection site.

Felicia was already a fighter. She survived FIP, went through countless medications, almost became paralyzed, and with the dedication of her owner, she recovered and was given more time to enjoy life.

A year or two later, she was vaccinated again through a home service. Unfortunately, her anti-rabies vaccine was given around the nape area instead of a recommended limb site. She later developed FISS in that area.

This is why injection site matters in cats. FISS is very rare, and this is NOT a reason to avoid vaccination. Vaccines save lives. But when injections are given at recommended sites on the limbs, surgery or even amputation may still be an option if FISS develops.

For Felicia, because of the tumor’s location and how fast it was spreading, surgery was no longer possible.

That day, euthanasia was our last act of care for her.

Before calling her owner, I had to sit for a moment, hold back my tears, compose myself, and still be her veterinarian.

I was lucky she was my last patient that day. Imagine starting your day saying goodbye to a patient, then walking into your next consult and trying to act like your heart isn’t heavy.

This is also part of veterinary medicine that people don’t always see.

We’re doctors, but we’re human too. We get attached. We grieve too. And sometimes, when medicine can no longer take away their suffering, the kindest thing we can give is a peaceful goodbye.

Sleep now, Felicia. You fought so hard and you did so well. 🤍
