When clients visit Zacarias Animal Clinic, they often want to meet the veterinarian first.
But behind every consultation, surgery, confined patient, laboratory test, and recovery, there is an entire team quietly working together.

Our clinic is not just one doctor. It is a group of people who chose a profession that is equal parts medicine and patience. From our Mangaldan Branch to our Urdaneta Branch, each day starts the same way, cages cleaned before opening hours, confined patients checked even before coffee, and morning rounds done to make sure every pet had a comfortable night. You’ll see staff members kneeling beside nervous patients, hand-feeding those who refuse to eat, and talking softly to animals who don’t understand why they are here. Sometimes the job is assisting in surgery, sometimes it’s laboratory work, and sometimes it’s simply sitting beside a confined pet so they won’t feel alone.

Many pet owners only notice their pet’s ears when there is already a problem: bad odor, dark discharge, redness, or constant scratching.

But in reality, ear disease is one of the most common conditions we see in dogs and cats, and it often starts silently.
Inside the ear canal, moisture, wax, and debris easily accumulate. When not cleaned properly, this becomes the perfect environment for:
• bacteria
• yeast
• ear mites
• inflammation and infection
By the time pets start shaking their head or crying when the ear is touched, the condition is usually already painful.

Signs your pet may have an ear problem
• frequent head shaking
• scratching the ears
• rubbing the face on the floor or furniture
• foul smell from the ears
• brown, yellow, or black discharge
• sensitivity when the ear is handled

Some pets don’t show obvious signs they simply become quieter, irritable, or less playful because of discomfort.

Regular ear cleaning helps:
• remove wax and trapped dirt
• reduce moisture buildup
• prevent bacterial and yeast overgrowth
• detect problems early before infection worsens

This is especially important for pets with floppy ears, hairy ear canals, swimmers, and pets with allergies.
Untreated ear infections can progress deeper into the ear canal and may eventually affect hearing and balance. Some severe cases even require long-term medication or surgery which is why prevention is always better.

Not all ears should be cleaned the same way.
At the clinic, we examine the ear canal first before cleaning. Some ears need only routine cleaning, while others require medication or gentle flushing. Cleaning an infected ear at home without proper guidance can actually worsen pain or push debris deeper.

𝚆𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝙴𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚢 𝙼𝚒𝚗𝚞𝚝𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛𝚜

Recently, we managed an emergency Cesarean Section (CS) after a late-pregnancy ultrasound revealed weak fetal heart rates.
Fetal heart rate monitoring is one of the most important assessments we perform in pregnant dogs and cats. When heart rates begin to drop, it signals fetal distress meaning the babies may not be receiving enough oxygen. In situations like this, waiting can put lives at risk.
Because of the ultrasound findings, an emergency CS was immediately advised and performed.
Why Heart Rate Monitoring Is Crucial
During late pregnancy, ultrasound helps us evaluate:
• Litter size
• Fetal movement
• Placental condition
• Fetal heart rate
When heart rates fall below normal levels, it becomes a medical emergency. Early detection allows us to intervene before it becomes too late.

A CS is unique because we are caring for:
• The mother under gasanesthesia
• Multiple fragile newborns requiring imediate support
Once delivered, each puppy was quickly assessed. Airways were cleared, breathing stimulated, and body temperature supported. Newborn puppies cannot regulate heat or oxygen effectively on their own, making the first minutes of life extremely critical.

After stabilization, the puppies were placed in a temperature-controlled neonatal ICU.
This controlled environment helps:
• Prevent hypothermia
• Support breathing
• Reduce stress
• Improve survival, especially in emergency deliveries
At the same time, the mother was carefully monitored for safe anesthesia recovery, bleeding control, and post-operative comfort.

𝐀 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐞𝐭 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬
Late pregnancy monitoring is very important. A simple ultrasound can detect early signs of fetal distress and guide timely medical decisions. Planned monitoring is always safer than waiting for an emergency.
