🌊🌱 VSU Biodiversity Research Center on Marine Ecosystem Conservation

The Visayas State University (VSU) Biodiversity Research Center recently conducted a vital study on seagrasses and mangroves, led by student researchers as part of their thesis work. The research findings were presented to the LGU of Guinapondan, Samar, highlighting the rich marine biodiversity of the area and the need to protect it.

We at CCF Integrated Farm are honored to be invited to the event and to represent OMMRO (Organikong Magsasaka at Mangingisda sa Rehiyon Otso), especially in line with our advocacy on Zero Biowaste Program — promoting the use of organic fertilizers and developing alternative protein sources for livestock feeds.

🌿💧 As discussed during the event, upland sediments—often caused by deforestation, poor farming practices, and land degradation—can severely damage our coastal ecosystems. Sediments can:
🔹 Smother corals
🔹 Block sunlight for seagrass photosynthesis
🔹 Suffocate the roots of mangroves

These ecosystems are not only vital for marine biodiversity but also protect our shorelines and provide livelihoods for local communities.

đź’¬ As our OMMRO President, Junn Paredes, emphasized:
“Kailangan nating alagaan ang kabundukan, para maprotektahan ang ating kababaan.”
(We must take care of the uplands to protect our lowlands.)

Let’s continue to work together for a greener, cleaner, and more sustainable Region VIII! 🌎💚

| No yard? No problem! Growing kamote and ube is made possible in your balconies and patios through urban gardening.

With the use of a good old sack filled with the right mixture of garden soil and compost, this creates the perfect environment for tubers to thrive and grow. By planting cuttings 5-10 cm deep with at least 6 hours a day of sunlight and regular watering, this develops healthy root development and strong photosynthesis, leading to the eventual spurt of rootcrops right in your sack.

This method is low-cost and more practical effort aiding in reducing diseases and pests while growing nutritious food at home. Institutions like PhilRootcrops fully support this simple but science-based technique, as this not only promotes sustainability but ensures food security with more Filipinos growing ube and kamote even within the city!

FEATURE | Seeds of Leadership: Dr. Jose L. Bacusmo’s Transformative Legacy in Agriculture and Public Service

In talks of outstanding leadership and great minds, the name Dr. Jose Bacusmo definitely rings a bell among Viscans and Baybayanons. Fondly known to many as “Sir Joe”, he served as the 5th President of the Visayas State University- later on transitioning as a Councilor of the City of Baybay.

A visionary in agricultural science, he spearheaded the development of new root crop varieties in PhilRootcrops, aiming for the best potential of agronomic value and focusing on farmer-centered innovation along with food system resiliency.

Embarking on his new role in public service, Sir Joe remains a steadfast advocate for sustainable agriculture, rural development, and inclusive growth. His enduring legacy is rooted not just in science, but in empowering farmers and shaping the future of Philippine agriculture.

READ: THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT WITH UBE!

In February 2025, ground was broken on one of the region’s most ambitious agricultural projects: the Ube Processing Plant in Tunga, Leyte. Valued at ₱50 million, the facility is the result of a strategic collaboration among key organizations, including VSU PhilRootcrops, the VSU Biodiversity Center, OMMRO, Filipino Ube House, ATI, RAFC, and the Fatima Multi-Purpose Cooperative (Fatima MPC). This initiative marks a significant step toward transforming Region 8 into a major player in the ube value chain.

Officially launched on May 30, 2025, the processing plant is designed to operate year-round. It aims to reduce post-harvest losses, increase farmers’ incomes, and stimulate rural economies. Most importantly, it will encourage farmers—particularly those in upland and idle land areas—to adopt ube as a sustainable and profitable crop.

Research Collaboration on Organic Ube Production 🍠🌱

We are thankful to the VSU Master of Science in Forestry and Tropical Ecology student for presenting the results of a study on various organic fertilizer trials—including vermicast, concoctions, and frass—applied to Organic Ube Production.

We are also very proud that the clients involved in the study—JEFSPA, JF Healthy Farm, and CCF Integrated Farm—are all active members of OMMRO (Organikong Magsasaka at Mangingisda sa Rehiyon Otso). 🙌

Our heartfelt thanks to Visayas State University (VSU) for this meaningful initiative. This kind of research greatly supports our efforts toward more sustainable, organic, and science-based farming practices.

> “The plans of the diligent lead surely to abundance.” — Proverbs 21:5

We believe that through hard work, collaboration, and faith, we will continue to reap good harvests for our people and our land.

Together, we grow better! 🌿💚
