Fish of the Day — Black Ghost Knifefish
Meet the Black Ghost Knifefish (Apteronotus albifrons) — one of the most unique freshwater fish you can keep.
Origin: South America, particularly the Amazon Basin
Adult Size: Up to around 18–20 inches (45–50 cm)
Behavior: Nocturnal — most active during the night
Special Feature: Uses a weak electrical field to sense its surroundings and navigate in the dark.
Unique Movement: Its long a**l fin allows it to swim forward, backward, and even hover with incredible control.
Diet: Carnivorous — enjoys meaty foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, worms, and other suitable frozen or live foods.
Temperament: Generally peaceful with appropriately sized tank mates, but may prey on fish small enough to fit in its mouth.
Fun Fact: Despite its name, the Black Ghost Knifefish cannot give you an electric shock. Its electrical signals are extremely weak and are mainly used for navigation and detecting prey.
Black Ghost Knifefish can grow surprisingly large, so they eventually require a spacious aquarium with plenty of swimming room, hiding places, and subdued lighting.
