Because sometimes, we’re just too busy saving lives.

As a referral facility, we are occupied with untangling complicated cases, making critical decisions, and doing everything we can to give our patients another chance.

We forget to take the “before and after” photos—not because the results don’t matter, but because the treatment and seeing our patients get better matter more.

And sometimes, we simply don’t have the time to document every success. Our hands are busy caring, our minds are busy thinking, and our hearts are focused on the patient in front of us.

There is one thing that separates a doctor from a great doctor: having a strong list of differential diagnoses.

A differential diagnosis is a list of possible diseases that could explain a patient’s clinical signs and symptoms. It is the foundation of good clinical reasoning.

At AKVH, our doctors don’t jump to conclusions or rely on what’s simply familiar or comfortable. Instead, our Internal Medicine Team takes a problem-based, evidence-based approach to every case. What do AKVH vet techs do?
Most certainly not scrubbing kennels or washing dishes.
Their job is not merely drawing blood or pushing buttons in the laboratory.
The AKVH Vet Techs are in a league of their own.
They perform the most vital of tasks in the care and management of patients. Their work complements the work of our licensed vets.
AKVH Vet Techs are adept at unblocking urinary obstructions in dogs and cats, putting in nasogastric tubes, endotracheal tubes. They do laser therapy, physical therapy. They are amazing at achieving diagnostic quality radiographs with correct positioning and collimation. They assist during soft tissue/ orthopedic surgeries, endoscopic and fluoroscopic procedures.
CPR in emergency situations- this team knows what to do.
And yes, they even know ultrasonography. Doppler? M mode? Yes, they know how to do those and interpret them too.
So you see, the AKVH vet techs are indispensable to the hospital setting.

The real heroes in the AKVH Operating Room- the AKVH Anesthesia Team.
Dr. Shawn has trained in Anesthesia and Analgesia for Healthy and Compromised patients at University of Sydney. While Dr. Li has sharpened his skills, especially in artificial respiratory ventilation with Mindvet Academy in Thailand.

Contrary to what many think, anesthesia is not a “one size fits all” procedure. It does not only involve monitoring anesthesia depth but tidal volume, ECG, mean arterial pressure, end tide CO2 and other parameters to keep the patient safe while he is asleep. It should not be performed by a non licensed vet.

The AKVH Anesthesia team rules our operating room. They have the power to clear a patient for surgery, postpone his procedure or cancel it altogether.

While the surgeon’s role can become routine, the anesthesiologist job is never the same. Each patient is different, requiring different anesthesia regimens and drug cocktails. He keeps a close watch over vital signs and essentially, keeps the patient alive. It’s a tough job- especially when it involves brachyceohic breeds, senior pets or those with heart or renal disease.

Next time your pet has surgery, make sure to thank the anesthesiologist as well. Their job is harder than that of the surgeon 🌶️🔥

IR is a surgical subspecialty dealing with minimally invasive, imaging-guided procedures for the respiratory, urinary and cardiovascular systems.

This is M!
She is a very sweet senior fur baby that needed surgery for pyometra.
Unfortunately she also had some kidney issues and a low platelet count.
That’s why she was referred to AKVH from Dr. John’s Vet Clinic for surgery.
The surgery was a success and M is home now with her family :-)
Kudos to M’s surgical team Dr. Ging, VT Rizza and CN Edcel, and most especially to her anesthesiologist Dr. Shawn who tailor-made M’s anesthesia plan.
