HOW DID ST. ROCH BECOME THE PATRON SAINT OF DOGS?

Catholic dog owners or 'hoomans' would surely say that this day is special for their paw-buddies, because today, we are celebrating the memorial of Saint Roch, the patron of dogs. But did you know that St. Roch is also a powerful patron against plagues?

In the 14th century, Saint Roch devoted himself to assisting the sick who were suffering from the plague. He visited several towns in Italy and eventually was infected with the same disease that he was battling. Afraid that he would infect others, Saint Roch isolated himself from others by going into a self-quarantine in the forest. There he was slowly dying, but God provided for him by sending him a dog.

Saint Roch became the patron saint of dogs because a dog helped him during his trying moments. That God-sent dog would lick his sores and bring him bread when he was suffering from the plague.
