Pigs are fascinating animals that are – contrary to widespread belief – incredibly intelligent, social, and one of the cleanest animals! Here is a list of amazing facts about these complex creatures.

Pigs are one of the smartest animals on the planet. Their intelligence ranks higher than dogs and even some primates!
In their natural state, Pigs are very clean animals. They keep their toilets far from their living or feeding area.

They are much more tolerant of colder temperatures than heat. Pigs have no sweat glands, so they can't sweat hence enjoy being in mud to keep themselves cool.
When they are trained piglets can learn their names by two to three weeks of age and respond when called and can learn tricks faster than dogs.

Did you know that goats are more likely to have their ears pointed forward when they are experiencing positive emotions than when experiencing negative emotions? Also, the pitch of their voice is more likely to be steady when feeling positive emotions, whereas it may go up and down more when they are feeling distressed.

Goats are also able to distinguish between the happy and sad calls of other goats. When they hear a sad call, they listen more intently and actually have a physiological response to hearing the sad calls.

Many humans who care for dogs have witnessed the “puppy dog look” when they have been confronted with an unsolvable problem, such as their ball being stuck under the couch. Individual responses will vary, but some dogs will try to reach it and when they can’t, they’ll turn and look pointedly at their human guardian. Humans will typically perceive this look as, “Help. I can’t get it!” This same behavior has been studied in goats! Research has found that goats will also attempt to solve the problem, and when they can’t they will look to the human to fix the issue!

Squirrels are amazing creatures. Did you know they can leap 10 times their body length and turn their ankles 180 degrees to face any direction when climbing? They also have superb vision, and they learn by quickly copying other animals.

Squirrels are generally small animals which range in size from 10 to 14 cm and 12-16 grams to 1.27 in total length and 8kg in weight. However they typically have slender bodies with very long bushy tails and large eyes, they also have soft and silky fur which ranges in thickness from species to species even the coat colour is also highly variable among different species.
In most of the species, the higher limbs are generally longer than the forelimbs and all of the species either have four or five toes on each foot. The tree squirrel, unlike the other mammals, descends a tree head first, they do so by rotating their ankles almost 180 degrees.

Squirrels can live in almost every habitat, from Tropical rainforests and deserts to higher polar regions. They are predominantly herbivores, but many of the species can also eat insects and other small vertebrae.

International Whale Shark Day!
August 30th is International Whale Shark Day! This celebration was created to raise awareness about the importance of whale sharks to marine ecosystems. Whale sharks face falling population numbers. At AlgaeBarn, we are taking this occasion to talk about how we can all do our part to help protect these magnificent animals.

Every year on August 30th, the world shines the spotlight on these wonderful animals. Whale sharks live in warm waters all over the world. They are filter feeders, so their 3,000 or so tiny teeth aren’t nearly as scary as it sounds! Whale sharks spend their days inhaling plankton, fish eggs, small fish, and tiny squid. To eat, whale sharks filter thousands of gallons of water through their gills: https://www.algaebarn.com/blog/our-oceans/intl-whale-shark-day/

INTERNATIONAL DOG DAY: A special day to celebrate all dogs around the world!

The International Dog Day is observed annually on August 26 to honour all dogs – no matter shapes, sizes, age and breeds – and encourage adoption to all those who have yet to find a home and a family forever.
It is a good and symbolic occasion to celebrate man’s best friend and to remember that every dog around the world should deserve a better life: a life of joy, love, protection, care and respect. A special day to raise awareness about dog adoption because if you are looking for a life’s companion, shelters are full of four-legged friends who are waiting for their chance and will bring just happiness to your days:https://www.oipa.org/international/international-dog-day/

Dogs are the most popular pet on the planet. A third of ALL households around the world have a dog. These playful, friendly, loyal animals make great companions, but they can also be fierce and tough protectors, or intelligent helpers.
They can learn over 100 words and gestures, dogs are thought to be as smart as two-year-old children (and much easier to train!), so many owners teach them commands and tricks.
Dog noses are at least 40x more sensitive than ours, These clever canines have an incredible sense of smell – allowing them to follow scent trails days after they were left. Amazingly, bloodhounds‘ sense of smell is so spot on that it can be used as evidence in court. Dogs also have fantastic hearing! They can detect high-pitched noises and spot sounds from much further away than humans can.

Wild koalas are an indicator species, showing the health (or lack thereof) of the ecosystems upon which they depend — and clearly, the pressure is on. One Tree Planted is actively working to restore their habitats through reforestation in Australia.

Koalas Don’t Have To Drink (Much) Water, their name comes from the Dharug Aboriginal word and means “no drink." And in fact, Koalas don’t need to drink very much water because most of their hydration needs are satisfied by their dietary staple, eucalyptus leaves. They can and do drink from creeks and water holes if necessary, but if you see a koala drinking, it’s probably in distress.

Their main source of food, eucalyptus, is toxic, fibrous, and not very nutritious. And while they have an unusually long caecum to help them digest and break down fiber, they’re only able to absorb about 25% of what they consume — which is why they have to eat so much. In fact, an adult Koala eats up to 1 kilogram of leaves…. every day!

Parrots tend to become depressed to the point that they may even pluck their own feathers. While parrots are a common bird species in India,
like peacocks and pigeons, there is so much that we don’t know about them.
There are about 370 species of parrot in the world, The average lifespan of parrots is 30 years, which is longer than other similar-sized birds and mammals. They are omnivorous birds, meaning they eat fruits, nuts, seeds, and meat.
Parrots have four toes per foot out of which two point forward and two point backward. This configuration is known as zygodactylous. Parrot feathers are known to contain psittacofulvin, a bacteria-resistant pigment, which gives them red, yellow and green colouration.

August the 8th is International Cat Day!, and it’s not hard to see why our little feline friends hold such a special place in our affections.

Funny cat videos, memes and cute pictures of cats are some of the most viewed content online, which just confirms our obsession with the furry things. While research shows that watching funny cat videos online can boost a person’s energy and create positive emotions, according to the experts owning a cat can also be good for your heart. Petting a cat is said to reduce stress levels, and with people having such hectic lives, they can be an easier and less demanding choice of pet than owning a dog.

If you ask me i’d say that cats have more than earned their extra treats and cuddles this International Cat Day, so go on, show your appreciation to that moggy in your life or buy that extra pack of cat food at the shops to donate to your local rescue centre as a little thanks to our four legged pals!
