Phumba, our English bulldog, was more than a pet—she was a quiet presence that made every ordinary moment feel complete. From the time she was small, she grew up sweet and loving, the kind of dog who didn’t need to demand attention because her love was already felt. She had a way of choosing to sit beside us, as if simply being near was her favorite language of care.

Though gentle, Phumba loved to run. Seeing her move across the yard—ears flopping, heart wide open—was pure joy. She was obedient too, not out of fear, but out of trust. She listened because she loved, and she loved because she belonged.

One drizzling morning on the farm, something tender and unforgettable happened. Phumba asked for a bath. As the soft rain fell, we washed her gently, laughing and talking as we always did. After the drizzle passed, a rainbow stretched across the sky, and we took a picture of her—Phumba calm and beautiful, framed by colors that felt like a promise. It was one of those moments you don’t realize is sacred until later.

Before heading out for a family lunch, we told her to stay for a little while. She looked at us with that familiar calm, as if to say she understood.

As we were heading back home to the farm, still unaware of what awaited us, the radio played Sweet Caroline—Phumba’s favorite song. In that moment, the music felt like more than coincidence. It felt like a gentle farewell, a final wag of the tail, a reminder of joy, love, and togetherness.

When we came back, she was gone—but not in pain, not in fear. She was gone with a smile.

Phumba lived as she left: quietly, lovingly, and surrounded by peace. Her memory runs with us still, sits beside us still, and rests in our hearts like a rainbow after rain.
