As I celebrate Father’s Day today, I grieve with the loss of one of my beloved cats, Mommy Cat.
I found Mommy Cat during pandemic. She was ill and pregnant. She was struggling to survive and save the lives of her unborn kittens. Unfortunately, she had a miscarriage and non of her kittens survived. I never thought of any other name to call her but “Mommy”. She has shown what any mother, human or animal, will do for her offsprings.
Since I found her, Mommy has transformed into a beautiful and chonky cat who loves to eat a lot and spends most of her days sleeping in different areas of the house. The past months have been very challenging for her as she battled respiratory infections. She spent the past months inside her condo. Yesterday, I decided to let her out, roam around and do what she used to do before. I also had the chance to cuddle with her and tell her everything I want to tell her. This morning, I found her lifeless inside her condo. She probably had difficulties last night but I know she’s in better place now.
“Mommy, you showed us how love heals and transforms. You showed us that a mother’s love is seen not only in humans but even in other species. You are basically what love is. You may be a “mommy” but you will always and forever be my baby. As promised yesterday, I will find you again in another life and we will be together forever. I love you so much, my Mommy! Please hug your brothers and sister in heaven for me.”
I may not have real children but I know how it feels to be a father —to love, to care, to protect, to provide. Some people may never understand the love I give and kind of fatherhood I live everyday but this is what parenthood means —doing and giving what you can and even beyond what you can for your children.
Happy Father’s Day to all human dads and furdads.
