Hello all! We are in desperate need for shredded paper! If you have any we would really appreciate it to be dropped off to us at the centre.

We need A4 size paper as it comes out of the shredder. But not cross cut size. 😊😊

It’s Grey-face Petrel kind of weather!!

These birds will come inland to seek shelter from the wind and stormy seas. Often being drawn in by lights from the city.

If you see one, please bring it into us at the centre where they can all rest and be released together when ready.

2 Oyster catcher eggs, their nest was in the new marina construction sight and would have been run over by a machine so Robert removed the eggs to our incubator room at the centre. Last night, one hatched and the second egg followed a few days later.

Hello all, wow some beautiful sun shine!

Spring is in the air and with that comes the arrival of baby birds.

Unfortunately, we have had a huge influx of ducklings and we are at capacity.

If you or someone you know can help to adopt or take in ducklings, please give us a call on 09 4381457

Something very exciting has arrived here at the centre!

Here in our incubator is a kiwi egg found in Jordan valley by the Department of Conservation. A fresh egg will then take 70 to 80 days to hatch.

The centre has hatched over 280 eggs since being open.

Stay tuned for updates!

Brrrrrr the weather sure is getting colder!! 🥶❄️

We have had a few storms lately and the last one brought this beautiful Giant Black Petrel inland to Baileys beach in Dargaville. After a few days here at the centre, it was fit for release!

🪶Length: Northern – 80 to 95 cm. Southern – 85 to 100 cm.

🪶Weight: Northern – 3 to 5 kg. Southern – 3 to 8

🪶An estimated 2,570 pairs of northern giant petrels breed in New Zealand annually, before dispersing to temperate and subtropical seas during winter.

🪶Giant petrels don't snorkel with their bills. While they do have prominent, tube-like nostrils on the top of their bills, these are primarily used for excreting excess salt and for enhanced smell, not for snorkeling.

Last week, three members from C3 Limited at Northport Marsden Point, Zion Te Kura, Dennis Henson and Juan Miranda who are Crane Operators found themselves on the ground rescuing a Morepork.

Juan said, “We were doing some work in the log yard and as I was walking between the log rows when I came across a bird that blended in pretty well with all the bark on the ground, initially I didn’t think much of it until it turned its head and I had 2 big bright yellow eyes staring at me. I yelled out too Dennis and Zion and we were all just standing there in shock because we had never come across anything so special like that at work before. We noticed right away it had an injured wing, so we gave the Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre a call. With the great assistance over the phone all three of us managed to safely grab a hold of him and place him in a spare box we had in the van. We made the drive from Marsden Point to Whangārei straight away. It seriously made our day, and we were 100% meant to be there at that very moment because any other day or even another 20 minutes it could have been a very sad outcome for the morepork in that environment full of heavy machinery and thousands of logs.”

We love to hear how a bird was rescued when it arrives here at our centre, and this story was too good not to share.

How about this rain Whangarei!!

On the ‘bright’ side, we have the most beautiful rainbow coloured Wood Pigeon in our care at the moment and what a stunner it is. Doing very well and hopefully will be due for release very soon.

This is a relatively large bird, measuring about 51 cm long. That is big compared to common pigeons that you find in North America or Europe (rock pigeon) which measure around 30 – 35 cms.

They lay a single egg per nesting attempt (although they may nest more than once each season). They also stick with their mates for life, and not just during mating season.
