⚠️CANINE COUGH OUTBREAK IN WHANGAREI ⚠️

We wanted to inform you of a recent outbreak of Canine Cough (also known as kennel cough) reported in the Whangārei area over the past two weeks. While Doggy Den remains canine cough–free, we are taking proactive steps to ensure it stays that way and to protect the health of all dogs in our care.

Canine cough is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads easily in environments where dogs interact closely. We kindly ask all clients to monitor their dogs closely for any symptoms, which may include:

⚠️A persistent, dry, hacking cough (often described as a “honking” sound)
⚠️Sneezing or nasal discharge
⚠️Lethargy or reduced energy levels
⚠️Loss of appetite
⚠️Mild fever

If your dog is showing any of these symptoms, please keep them at home and DO NOT bring them to daycare until they have fully recovered and been cleared by a veterinarian if necessary. We will call you and send your dog home if we notice any symptoms while in our care.

We are maintaining strict hygiene and cleaning protocols within Doggy Den and will continue to monitor the situation closely. Your cooperation is essential in helping us provide a safe and healthy environment for all dogs.
If you have any concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

State of Emergency declared in Northland as precautionary step

A State of Emergency has been declared for Northland as at 5pm Friday 10 April, for an initial period of seven days, as part of the regional response to Cyclone Vaianu.

Regional-wide emergency declarations are relatively rare in Northland and the move has been taken as a precaution given the potentially significant impacts that may be seen across Taitokerau from Cyclone Vaianu.

Declaring an emergency is a step under our legislation which allows the Civil Defence Controller and/or those to whom they delegate authority, access to emergency powers, granting authority to protect life and property in extraordinary emergency events under the Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Act 2002.

The most commonly-used emergency powers include evacuating premises and places, entering premises, closing roads and public places, removing aircraft, vessels, vehicles etc and requisitioning property, equipment, material or supplies. Of these, enabling evacuations is often the key reason for an emergency declaration.

We don’t know yet whether emergency powers will need to be used, but this declaration means we can act quickly if required.

According to Frankie, she dislikes the rain and prefers snuggling up on the warm couch.

Due to the worsening weather conditions, we kindly request that you keep your dogs home today and tomorrow if possible, with the exception of small dogs that have a suitable inside/outside area.

Most dogs tend to dislike extremely rainy days 🥲
